Its the fight of the year in '89, It's very underrated and I'm fortunate enough to own the closed circuit event in its entirety on VHS to DVD transfer.

I’d consider it one of the top 10 fights of the 1980s, but there were some amazing fights so it wouldn’t be outrageous to rank it outside the top 10. I mean, here are 10 great ones off the top of my head that it would be hard to exclude:

    Duran-Leonard 1
    Saad-Lopez 2
    Sanchez-Gomez
    Leonard-Hearns 1
    Sanchez-Nelson
    Pryor-Arguello 1
    Gomez-Pintor
    Chacon-Limon 4
    Hagler-Hearns
    Harding-Andries

Plenty of other ones as well… but I’d find a place in the top 10 for Duran-Barkley myself.

Interested to hear where others would place it - inside or outside the top 10?

I also missed Boza-Limon in 1981 and Chacon-Boza 2 in 1983 off my original list. Chacon-Limon 4 is insane but those two fights were nearly as good. That makes the case for Duran-Barkley in the top 10 even tougher.

    Oh my God yes!
You know which fight was surprisingly good but im not sure if it was in the late 70s or early in 1980 , was Ocasio-Young..these two bore masters without much of power went to war.

    Also I forgot Dokes-Weaver 2 i think on my list and Holmes-(eats) with a Spoon (not a fo)..err..Homes-Witherspoon

    I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ocasio-Young but it was 1979. apparently.

Dokes-Weaver 2 had a fantastic opening couple of minutes in the first round but then settled into a more conventional heavyweight battle with both fighters fighting in fits and starts.

    Holmes-Witherspoon was excellent, though.

But it came in 25th in ESPN or Sports Nation I think as far as the 30 greatest Heavyweight wars (Holmes-Witherspoon was 15th I think)

Dokes-Weaver 2, you mean? Ok, I just remember the first round being a war and the rest of it not but my memory could be faulty.

The 80s and 90s were when you could truly expect any fight t suddenly explode into a fan friendly war.
