A review/tribute to two great fighters...the trilogy between these two giants. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Excellent RC watched first vid so far and I thought Ross looked the more complete fighter. Mclarnin showing a nice jab. No catch weight BS here which is nice too.
First heard of Barney Ross by my dad....he told me what a brave, skilled fighter he was,...and his exploits vs the Japanese in WW2...and that movie based on his real life struggles, "****** On My Back"....and boy, wouldn't he catch it today with a movie title like that!!!
RC These are some great fights for sure. I'm confident in rating Ross the better of the two IMO. I love how the smaller Ross really takes it to Mclarnin who in return exhibits a nice long left hand and some slick movement. Highly entertaining.
Great fighters. I rewatched the third fight and scored it narrowly for Ross. Of course you cannot be certain as the rounds are short, McLarnin was sure he won. There is some confusion about Dempsey´s score. The film gives is as 5-3 with 7 even, Boxrec says 7-5 with 3 even, and the book on Jimmy McLarnin says 6-4 with 5 even. All scores for Barney Ross. Funny, I have another version of the second fight from German TV which shows round 11.
James P. Dawson (NY Times) Dempsey ... at the finish voted five rounds for Ross, three for McLarnin and seven even. Judge Goldberg gave Ross eight rounds, six to McLarnin and one even. Judge Lecron voted nine rounds for Ross, four for McLarnin and two even. The writer scored ten rounds for Ross and five for McLarnin.
In regards to comparisons with Barney Ross, Jimmy McLarnin has an edge in my book because he was a world-class fighter as early as 1925 while Ross really wasn't one until the early 1930s. - Chuck Johnston
