I don't recall watching footage of Day, so purely based on their records, Ross. Ross was clearly the substantially greater fighter and he beat Joe Gnoully, who Day drew with.
Not too difficult to formulate a win for Ross, he annexed 3 world titles fought the best fighters of his gen, some great boxers, and HOF residents, took the immortal Armstrong to relieve Ross of his WW belt, so yes I would go for a comfortable win for Barney. stay safe Ron.
I know Barney was a great fighter he was the Champion, which prevented Day from becoming the champion. Davey was Barney's policemen, you had to get through Davey to fight Ross. From 1934 to 1938, Ambers, Montanez, Ramey and Armstrong who was a featherweight wouldn't fight Day. Barney didn't have a hard punch, in fact he never knock out a #1 contender. When Barney fought Armstrong, Sam Taub was the announcer, mentioned that Day who is Barney's stablemate, " is cleverer and hits harder than Ross." Day & Norment Quarles fought on the same card. Pian & Winch told Ambers & Armstrong, they had to fight Day and beat him to get a crack at Barney's title. But, Mike Jacobs who controlled all of boxing in NY wouldn't go for it. Davey was bypassed, allowing Armstrong to fight Ross and Jacobs having Armstrong sign a five year contract to fight for him. This may come to you as a shook," Day was beating Armstrong, half blind from the 6th round to the 10th rd. Henry lost his early advantage and was bleeding profusely from a deep gash to his left eyelid. In the start of the 11th rd. Armstrong came out, hitting Day five times below the waist, which took its tow. The ref. gave that round to Day. Davey was taking blows below the waist in many other rounds, that the house referee, didn't utter a word, until the 12th round and said to Armstrong you can rest now, stopping the fight at 2:49 of the 12th." Day pummeled Champion Ambers in a non-title 10 round fight at the Hippodrome winning the last four rounds with heavy artillery, Lou was lucky to stay on his feet. Day was robbed! Pian & Winch offered $35,000 for a rematch with Armstrong and 25,000 for a rematch with Ambers for his title, both declined. Ambers was assigned by NBA to fight Day for his tilte on March 3rd 1940 or loss his crown. He was stripped of his Title. Uncle Mike Jacobs rush in Lew Jenkins who was 3rd or 4th class fighter to meet Ambers. Day was the #1 Ltweight and Welt challenger. I have 1000 ++ Newspaper clippings from NY, Chgo, Pitts, SF, Washington DC, AP, UP, Reuters and others. "Confidentially speaking Barney was a protege of Davey's." Mike Jacobs wanted to buy Day's contract but he wasn't for sale. Everything is verifiable (excerpts) from Newspaper clippings A lot of Champions were made up by Newspapers of the day. I don't disagree that Barney was a Great fighter, no doubt and so was Davey. I need to take a break. Have a good Day, everyone.
I have no disrespect for Barney he was a Champ and Davey was known as his assistant Lightweight Champion. It's funny all the fighters wanted to fight Ross and all refused to fight Stringbean Davey who looks like he's ready to drop dead any day.He just, nearly slaughtered Baby Arizemendi, who went home with a deep gash across his nose etc. Davey was unscathed. The fans booed the judges to high hell. Day just cut up Lello, Pancho, Montanez, Armstrong, Marquart, Garrison, Marchese, Sagilio,Gomer, Speigal, and all the rest of fighters on his resume. He beat Lou Ambers badly, and was robbed. The referee voted for Davey. You are welcome to ask me any questions on , Day, Ross, Armstrong, Ambers, Angott, Canzoneri, Jenkins, Zivic, Sugar Ray Robinson , anytime. Best regards to all you connoisseurs of note and others.
