Btw, I know I just started to score fights using the 10-point must system, but this fight was scored by rounds rather than points, so I decided to do so as well.

    1. Ross jabbed and clinched. Canzoneri was outboxed, but not badly. Ross.
    2. A notably tougher round than the opener. Also close. Canzoneri was not as sharp as he had been in previous bouts I'd seen him in against Chocolate and Jackie "Kid" Berg. Ross.
    3. Canzoneri showed more familiar form near the end. Ross.
    4. Canzoneri landed more jabs. Ross seemed to me to making less of an effort to evade punches and tie Canzoneri up when he got in a good punch. Canzoneri.
    5. Most consistent action in the fight thus far. Canzoneri outpunched Ross in a decent round. Canzoneri.
    6. Ross returned to the jab while Canzoneri moved side to side very well, occasionally landing a good jab or right hand. Canzoneri.
    7. Ross.
    8. A lot of two-fisted exchanges occurred between the Ross and Canzoneri. However, I sensed Ross's flurries were more effective. Ross.
    9. The best exchanges of the fight took place, with Canzoneri outslugging Ross for the first time. It was a sensational round. Canzoneri.
    10. One of the few rounds to be mostly clinching. Also the one of only two rounds I had even. Probably the least exciting round of the fight. Like I said. Even.
    11. Both were pretty bouncy. Another action round. Ross.
    12. Canzoneri was more aggressively effective. Canzoneri.
    13. The round was furiously contested. I thought Ross was outpunched by just a shade. Canzoneri.
    14. This was the other round I had even. Like the 10th, among the slowest of the fight. Even.
    15. Close, tough punch-up. Ross.

Final score: 7-6-2 for Ross. I was in disagreement with the commentator for this fight. He gave the indication that Ross dominated the fight from rounds 1 through 8. However, I gave Canzoneri three of those rounds.

Overall, Canzoneri didn't look very sharp as opposed to earlier bouts, but Ross didn't look so amazing either (btw this is the earliest Ross fight I've seen). I'm not laying blame on either of them. Actually, I think these two are really great boxers, and I think their equal ability is what made them both seem rather mediocre. It was just a tough fight and not an ideal clash of styles, I think.

Verdict: Not a classic, at least not for me, but still a fair bout. I wouldn't even say this one is better than average, but the two did keep up a good steady pace going, which is rare for a 15-round bout. It was largely clinch-free which I admired. Great film quality, and a particularly decent fight from the 7th on.

They both just look so damn good on film with plenty in the tank to go another 10 if need be ... A great fight for me , Canz fighting the bigger Ross , a classic

Canzoneri was clearly more talented and had the better highlights, but Ross was just so damn steady. That left jab never wavered.

    A great fight.

Your scoring would be about mine. A very close fight. Ross seemed the better over the first ten rounds, but appeared to tire as Canzoneri came on. Tony might have had a lot more experience going fifteen.

Ross was a classic boxer. Canzoneri had an oddball style with his hands low and leaving himself open to draw leads, but it worked for him. It appears a style which demands faster reflexes, so it is not surprising that Canzoneri began slipping when fairly young.

Thanks for posting and your evaluation.

Ross was tough as hell , same as McFarland was .. Chicago stockyards ..And I believe Packey trained Ross/developed him for the first 2 years of Ross' career .. before Packey joined the Indiana State Athletic Commision

Canzoneri had great longevity. He was boxing at the elite level for a period longer than Ross’s entire career.

I have Ross as the best of the bunch followed by Canz Amber's and McLarnin. Incredible fighters. Matter of fact just picked up a copy of Ross's autobiography cheap! Took a while but patience paid off. I have a McLarnin bio too. It's too bad the other men dont have books about them. They deserve it.

I call it a draw, Tony's punches were more effective, Barney's jabs didn't phase Canzoneri. I have the highest respect for all these great fighters. Ray Arcel worked with most of the following fighters.

    Jimmy McLarnin
    Davey Day
    Billy Patrolle
    Pedro Montanez
    Barney Ross
    Tony Canzoneri
    Lou Ambers

Robert, I can't resist a response here. The outcome of their two fights might support your conclusion that Ross was the best, but my vote is for Canzie.

William, my advice to you is look him up yourself online or elsewhere and then ask questions if you have them. Don't expect to be spoon fed all the time. There are no films of Davey Day that I know of, by the way.
