This fight could have gone either way. I like Ross by close decision. He was a master boxer who could have landed on even Benitez, Wilfred would have his moments of course but I would pick Ross.
One things for sure, or maybe three things, namely: 1. Benitez had an amazing radar type defense at his peak. 2. Ross was the more durable, stronger man. 3. Both men had great stamina, but the edge here would go to Ross, who could have maybe fought 20 rounds strongly. The winner would be Barney Ross over 15 close, fast paced, furious rounds, with maybe a knockdown for Barney along the way.
Ross was as dogged tough as they come. Great jaw, nice boxer, not a great punch but loved infighting, which was the style utilized in his day for it was entertainment and it was live crowds who lined up to see them. Unfortunately, the Benitez at 147 was a peak master boxer, near untouchable and would not be hindered by Ross' punch. Interesting fight, which I feel Benitez would keep in the middle of the ring.
