Hi guys, I have recently been trying to get the body positioning right to throw the Mexican left hook in the manner of Barrera and Chavez. I think I am doing something wrong as when I take that quick step to the left I do not feel I have the correct leverage to throw the shot properly. I have tried slowing down clips of the above fighters but I thought I would ask here. Has anyone seen any online videos where they go through it? My son has been doing some boxing at school and is quite good at it. I have been spending some time with him on footwork, which I believe is fundamental. I want to introduce him to that left hook but I want to do it the right way. If you know of any threads regarding this please point me in the right direction. :bbb
as a lead punch? or after something? great example of throwing a killer left hook to the body was tim bradley in his last fight, thats how I try to throw it
Here is Juan Manuel Marquez, and HOF Ricardo "Finito" Lopez's trainer, demonstrating how the Hook is thrown http://youtu.be/3IGBHNJIuEE
Might not be opening your left shoulder on the step? Or not bending down? Think of it as a slip left while stepping.
throw your right/rear shoulder forward slipping his right and and at the same time winding up your left. Throw it as if it were a hook/uppercut hybrid. Torque your hips and shoulders in to it as your throw it and make sure your weight is predominantly on your front foot. throw it like at as if it were a diagnol line starting low on the left side and rising up as it travels right
Hey guys thanks for all your tips. I will head back to the gym today and try things out on the punchbag.
Try working the bodysnatcher bag so you can practice the half hook/half uppercut motion that Ricky described above.
