A few days ago, Amir Khan was wondering whether his bout with Marco Antonio Barrera was on. Last night, Barrera and Don King, his promoter, promised that not only were they coming, but left no doubt about the size of the task that Khan has in front of him. Barrera, 35, has won world titles at three weights and has the ambition to become the first Mexican to win four. He has been told that he will get his title shot if he beats Khan at the MEN Arena, Manchester, on March 14. If some believe that Barrera is past it, the man himself and his promoter are not among them. King even felt the need to paraphrase Winston Churchill. “Is it the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning?” King said, obviously believing that this would not be the end of his boxer. “I'm looking forward to Marco Antonio Barrera knocking Amir out. Amir is young, he can come again.” The bout was in doubt after Barrera was cut during a warm-up bout in Mexico on Saturday, but doctors have given him the all clear. “Amir Khan should not be worrying about a cut, he should be worrying that I'm going to get him,” Barrera said. “I'm going to be training in the mountains in Mexico, like I always do for the big fights. I'm looking forward to making Amir Khan the No4 [British boxer he has beaten], right after Naseem Hamed.” Khan, 22, has been training in Hollywood under Freddie Roach, whom he turned to after being knocked out by Breidis Prescott last September and who twice trained Manny Pacquiao to beat Barrera. “Freddie Roach thinks that because he got one great fighter out of his camp, they are all going to be great, but I will be alone in the ring with Amir,” Barrera said. “He's got good speed, but he makes mistakes and his chin is questionable. “I can retire and be a legend right now, but I'm only 35 and I still have a lot to give. If I beat this kid, it will get me a shot at the title. That is what is driving me, the chance to be the first Mexican to be a world champion in four divisions. I don't predict the round, I just know the win is coming.” He said: "I want to make it clear I am still a contender. This fight will get me into the bigger fights. I just have to show up and win this fight and then I will get to those bigger fights again." I really like that Marco touched on Freddie Roach's **** talking. He is absolutely right. Just because Manny beat Marco does not mean he can make it certain that a less talented and experianced fighter in Amir can do the same.
I think 20% of Barrera beats this version of Amir. Barrera's bread and butter is his left hook to the body, a shot Amir went down from against Gomez. Marco has always been a very good body puncher, and in his last two fights, he was working the body all of the time. if Marco doesn't starch Khan with a right hand or left uppercut, he will get Khan out of there with body work. Barrera KO5 Khan.
I have never been a Kahn fan tho I never disliked him but you can bet everything you have that I will be a Kahn fan in this fight. I think Barrera might beat him but I will be rooting for Kahn.... hopefully Kahn will win by career ending KO. :thumbsup
Good quotes. Barerra has not looked good recently, slow, and this is a dangerous fight. Still, he seems well aware of what is on the line. So this could be good.
It's hard to look good when the guy is running around the ring the entire time. Also, Barrera clearly wanted to get rounds in. He could have ended both Ventura and Rojas at any point.
When close enough to fight, he looked slow. That was my take on the fights. I'm hoping he can turn it back in this one with Khan.
The Bareera that showed up to the last Pac Man fight takes Amir's head off!!! I hope Frank Warren is praying that they lay-off ruined him! 4 the record I want Marco to WIN! ...but i think Amir will get a technical stoppage him with a flurry in the 6-8th round!!
Barrera without a doubt. Khan may be flashy, but his chin is feathers and dust. An 80 year old Michael Gomez gave him a tough fight for gods sake. Barrera even in his diminished state, he is still a fighter with great boxing skills, decent speed, power, footwork, counter punching. The Barrera that fought Pac in the 2nd fight would certainly beat Khan. Barrera isnt shot. He has just slowed down overall. But he is a very fundamentally sound fighter, and he has not lacked the ability to pull the trigger at all. He could still beat 80% of the fighters in his weight class no trouble. Khan doesnt bring anything special to the table. Fasts hands that he holds low and no chin. Good power that hasnt been tested on anything but shopworn C grade fighters. Barrera all the way.
