Junior Jones was shot or at least close to it when Morales beat him imo. the pac win is big for him though.
Even though I started this thread I really cant pick between the two. I started out being a bigger Barrera fan then as the years went by I appreciated Morales just as much. The boxing display Barrera put on against Hamed and then even though he was past it,the fight he gave Marquez, which I thought could have been a draw gives him a very slight edge I guess.
I'd have to go with Morales. I think their three fights together were so close that other factors must be taken into account. I think Morales win over Pac is a far greater win than anything that Mab achieved. It's unfortunate for Morales that he wasn't given the decision against Diaz as that would have given him the record of the first Mex to win titles in 4 divisions. I think this would have given him the edge. I think Morales heart got him into trouble when he could have outboxed his opponent. He was overly swayed by what the fans thought. Both warriors but for me Morales epitomises everything a fighter should be.
Morales all the way for me. and he was a much better sport than Barrera. Barrera was blatantly trying to headbutt Pacman while getting a whipping, Morales took defeat on the chin and raised Pacman's hand. Then there was the suckerpunch incidcent.
Anyway - Ive been thru the Morales/Barrera debate far too many times, Im not going to go into the numerous reasons why I rank Morales higher again but there you have it.... Morales > Barrera for me.
People overlook this stuff because of MABs nice guy image but with that **** aside, as talented fighters, Morales was the better fighter in their primes (an ATG at 122, something MAB cant claim for ANY weight) & a better resume outside of their trilogy. Ps. the only clear cut win of their trilogy was fight 2 which went obviously to the wrong man. Botswana :smoke
One thing that always struck me about Morales was the limitations he showed aganst an ancient Zaragoza, who bounced punch after punch flush off his face and gave him a lot of trouble. Then you watch a prime zaragoza getting absolutely thrashed by Lora and Fenech. It hit home how underrated the '80s crop of Bantams was.Likely because they came after the legends of the '70s like Olivares.
A 21 yr old Morales outboxed the crafty old champion using skills & technique rather than speed, strength & power. Zaragoza aged very well & picked up lots of tricks along the way, I thought Ledermans unofficial card was too harsh on Morales who IMO showed a mature boxing head on young shoulders in that fight. A LOT of young fighters would have been exposed, beat & possibly learned from the loss... Erik gave us a glimpse of what was to come by adapting to every trick rd by rd & just plain beat the old guy in the end, stopping him with a nice straight right to the belly in rd 11. Zaragoza praised Morales technique above any other quality afterwards & as we know, Erik went from strength to strength, getting better each fight & cementing a legacy which will last forever in the eyes of fans that followed his career. Peace out :hat
It's Barrera for me. It's very close, and I love them both, and they are both greats, and Morales has the best single victory (1st Pac fight) - but I have to give Barrera the edge. In my eyes, he won two of the three fights, and has an ever-so-slightly better resume, and greater longevity.
Marco Antonio Barrera. He had the more impressive skill set, in my estimation, and won their trilogy 2-1. Not a lot else to say, it's close and debatable.
That was the least clear cut off the lot but MAB edged it for me, Morales got completely thrashed in 1, massive robbery orchestrated by the criminal Arrum, and 3 was closish (only 8-4 or 7-5) but very very clear for MAB
