I just watched the Barrera/Marquez fight for the first time and wow, Barrera should've been DQed for his BLATANT hit on JMM when he was down in the 7th. I mean this is just as bad as Dirrell/Abraham and Jones/Griffin. Go to about 4:30 of the video. Thoughts? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUt-BqpHU9U&feature=related[/ame]
It was definitely a KD by Barrera but if that hit doesn't qualify as a DQ, there is no such thing because it doesn't get any more blatant than that. Maybe if JMM had acted like he was hurt, he would've forced Nady's hand as Dirrell and Griffin both seemed hurt by the late hits.
That's the thing about guys who hit opponents when they're down (or other illegal shots). The refs are so inconsistent. When the fighter either can't continue or won't continue (puts on an acting job), the fouling fighter usually gets DQ'd or it's a no-contest. Otherwise, refs hardly do anything about it. Barrera-Marquez and Norris-Waters are two exceptions when the ref actually took a point away, but usually refs hardly do anything. When you look at other fights, it's hard to come up with a "fair" punishment for Barrera in this instance since the examples have such wide results. Check out Lennox Lewis in this instance and the punishment he received for hitting Mike Acey THREE times when he was down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-yNYco5PF4#t=5m12s Then you have Arthur Abraham getting DQ'd for hitting Andre Dirrell with one illegal shot. Because Dirrell couldn't go on (or if you think he faked it, wouldn't go on). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_DZnnhJnPA#t=1m12s
no, that would have deprived JMM of a good victory. no champion wants to win from the seat of his pants
If Marquez was badly hurt, or acted like he was badly hurt then he would have won by DQ. As it turned out, he was able to continue and he still beat MAB.
Also, comparing the three fights. The Dirrell-Abraham fight was the least dirty of them, IMO. It was only a good second, it was in the heat of the moment and Abraham took a swipe at him. Barrera was by far the dirtiest. He took a couple of steps bent over and then clocked Marquez.
the problem is is that the ref didnt tell him to go to a corner or go over and wait for marquez to get up he just froze for some reason also pac did it to marquez in ther first fight anyway this is what made barrera great he just didnt give a **** lol
I see it like this ... count the knockdown but give marquez 5 minutes to recover ... if he could continue (which was the case) let him finish ... if he couldn't then get the dq ... no doubt that knocked down should've counted ... I would've had it a 9-9 round with the knockdown .. but I had it a 10-7 round .. barrera had his ass beat that round and being that it was ruled a slip that's what I have to go by ... could've been round of the year
