How often should a boxer who is at the top of the sport a tittlest/champion or even a 10 round boxer step into the ring every year assuming that he has no injuries/health isues and no contract problems. Or what ever might keep him out of the ring. I say about 4 times a year. This should give him time to train for the fight. Have the fight. Rest take some time off, but not too much time s he dose not get too much out of shape. Train for the next fight. Have the fight....

3-4 unless they get pretty banged up in a fight, break a hand, bust an eardrum, bad cut, etc.

I'd say 3 times a year is reasonable. A fight every 4 months should give them enough time to train and recover, unless they take a beating.

4 is good. It leaves enough time (3 months) to recuperate and train for the next bout. If you fight 12rds, 3 per year seems reasonable, for you have to study the opponent and get enough stamina to last the full 12.

    "Barring health and contract issues"

I'd say broken hand etc. qualifies as health issue very well :nut

I agree & if this was the case, that would be four times in a twelve month period, which is good!

Remember Tyson back in the day. In the first six months of 1988, he fought three times. Holmes in Januay, Tubbs in March & Spinks in June! The rest of the year is well documented, but if I'm not mistaken, he was scheduled to box Bruno in September & another defense was pencilled in for Deember!

Tyson was one fighter who would have defended every month, six weeks or so, if he could!

Joe Louis fought like 7 times one year! I'd be ecstatic with that. Seeing as right now there are nothing but bums at heavyweight, it's the perfect time for a "Bum of the Month Club: Part II"

About every 3 or 4 months seems good though.

3 times seems the right amount to me. That gives new opponents time to emerge and allows time for a buildup for a bigger fight, while still leaving an opportunity to fight a mandatory or stay-busy opponent.

Fighters are absolutely capable of fighting 4-5 championship fights per year, and really, 3-4 times is not too much to ask. Guys like Arthur Abraham, Vitali Klitschko, Marco Huck, Hasegawa Hozumi, Tim Bradley and Edgar Sosa are fine examples and all fought 3-4 times this year and age (Vitali), division jump (Abraham) or tough competition (Bradley) did not slow them down.

In 1997 Oscar De La Hoya fought Miguel Angel Gonzalez, Pernell Whitaker, David Kamau, Hector Camacho and Wilfredo Vazquez, all very solid opponents in 12 months, incl. 3 full 12 rounders and a really tough one (Sweet Pea).

However, as much as some would like to fight every 2 month, TV DATES control boxing and no way a fighter other than the top drawers could get a date every two month, and the TV elite ain't wanna fight every two month.

Boxing is simply not big enough at the moment for 4-5 fights per year to become regular for champions. About 2.3 fights per year is what we get.

Wow that is crazy for 1997 I never realized that.

I am impressed with Vitali fighting 3 times this year that is good, Im very dissapointed with Wlad only fighting once, he is the one that should have been fighting 3 times. I think his brother should retire for the benefit of Wlad's career because Wlad could have been the one to KO Arreola, Vitali is taking fights from him in a way.

6-8 times. For the money they earn they should work and not make vacation for over half the year.
