Boxing promoter Barry Hughes has been detained over money laundering and mortgage fraud allegations.

About 35 officers were involved in an operation which broke down the doors of his house in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, at about 0730 BST on Wednesday.

They then removed valuables, including several large screen plasma TVs, DVD players and designer clothes.

Mr Hughes, 31, was detained on returning from holiday and taken to Greenock police station.

    Wire cutters
The high-profile raid on his property was carried out under a proceeds of crime warrant following a two-month investigation.

During the operation, officers used electric wire cutters to get through Mr Hughes' garden security gates.

Signs were then erected outside with the words: "Strathclyde Police: tackling serious and organized crime".

Mr Hughes arrived at the property at about 1230 BST after returning from a holiday in Spain. He was detained for questioning at 1330 BST.

Proceeds of crime laws allow police to seize cash and assets they suspect were funded through illegal activity.

i believe he was the first man to hold a fighter, promoter and managers card similtaneously in scotland. he has a dodgy past to say the least. huge ****in house, wonder how he made so much money...?

:-( Innocent till proven guilty as they say, but I think they have been trying to get Barry for something, anything, for a while. Everyone thinks he is a dodgy guy, but I know him reasonably well and he is totally sound, well, sound to me at least.

thought it was a knife he had in the nightclub attack. his boxing wasn't great either, i saw him get beat easy from a young martin watson and he got smashed by a journeyman after that

There were two seperate incidents in different nightclubs, one with a knife and one where a guy got beat with a pole.

I made my MC debut working for the guy and whilst I've never had a problem with him, I know others who have.
