He was awesome until he fought in Stevie Cruz in the desert heat in Las Vegas. That was a ba move on his manager's part. McGuigan was the hottest fighter after Mike Tyson at that time (1986) in boxing. It was a card in June of 86' called the Triple Hitter. McGuigan was headlining with Hearns-Shuler and Duran-Sims. The Irishman and Cruz was the first fight and fighting in that blazing sun and oppressive heat really ruined McGuigan who was obviously not used to it. Put him on the main event when the sun sets and it cools down and he would have stopped Cruz inside the distance. A great career was ruined and McGuigan also said his dad dying took his motivation away. His father always sang Danny Boy before his fights. Sadly, he had killed a man in th ring a few years before that. That also may have been in the back of his mind. He was an aggressive, relentless, strong as bull style with a terrific punch.
I don't know about that. His slip was starting to show quite a bit when he got banged up against Cabrera in the fight before that. He was very good for a short time, but his time at the top was very very brief. Three fight's worth really; Laporte, Pedroza, and Taylor.
