Two from nice and early in his career and one from later on when he was rebuilding. I'm trying to spread nostalgia, cheer and good vibes from here to well across the pond all the way down into Clones & beyond. I figured I've already posted plenty to begin concerning boxing's Latin American or Eastern little men, so why something entirely different this time out?

Anyone have any memories of McGuigan? I'm under the impression he was something of a cultural icon in his own time, in a period of time when there was tremendous strife in Ireland.

How good was he beyond that? Was he a great fighter, somewhere close to being one, or just the right man at the right time to displace someone who was a truly great fighter?

Any and all thoughts and opinions welcome. Enjoy!

    Great stuff Russell.
I remember when he first began gathering attention, not being oversold on him, but the wee fellow grew on me overtime.

Will give these a viewing this evening buddy.

    You are more than welcome!

It is a pleasure reading threads by someone who has a genuine interest in the title, as opposed to those creating stuff purely to gain attention.

Russell you did it again. This is from some of my favorite times and I was a huge fan. Liked his style. His economical footwork. He had a nice tight well schooled style. Much appreciated my man.

    :)

No problem at all. If you have a youtube channel feel free to give me an add, I've been uploading my best stuff as often as I can lately and the real objective is to spread some damn cheer and good will around.

What were you such a fan of back in the day? The times themselves, the people, the world at that time, the era....?

Russ ,I love anything to do with Barry ,so this is excellent. I'm English but have a boat load of Irish relatives .It was my cousins that used to ring me and told me all about Barry on his way up the ranks .Used to love his pappy singing o Danny boy in the ring. He brought all Ireland together when he fought ,something I don't believe was achieved by any other sport. He may have not being the greatest at his weight ,but he was and still is a legend in Ireland .

No problem, thank you for taking the time to come here and digest this stuff. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

I have heard he was a sort of uniting force, a figure head... which is a pretty remarkable feat for a boxer. Only a few have ever managed it, and he's one of the few from the modern age. Pretty remarkable man, all things considered.

Are there any statues, memorials, anything like that in Ireland or anywhere else in the UK of the man? Any that you've seen or visited, or has he not quite reached that level? I know he's rightfully in the IBHOF, though many people seemingly don't understand why he's there.

Think the posters in the British forum would appreciate this thread? I want to share and make some peoples day with a nostaglia bomb but don't want to be seen as an ******* stomping around on another board....

I couldn't tell u at the moment Russ to be honest if there's any thing to celebrate Barry over there. There certainly should be at least something ,for what he did for unity .
But the next time I speak to my relative s over I'll find out .
