    85/86, 2 of the then 3 world titles on the line, Nelson was happy to travel looking at his record would have been a great fight, great match up, big seller.

    I was 12 at the time, so cant remember why this didnt happen, any old heads here remember ?

    I have it a tight fight, 60-40 in Nelsons favour, probably winning a split 15 round decision

    Because Nelson would have flattened Barry?? Barry was good earner, he wasn't going to fight Nelson in a hurry.

    (60/40 for Nelson is WILDLY overrating Barrys chances IMHO)

    Hit the nail on the head and F*in drove it through the 2x4.

    The proffessor was a beast and would've destroyed Barry, not a fight the wee man needed. Nelson was one of Pernell's best wins btw even though he was stepping up, the way Pea shut him out was awesome to watch.

    Or sensible...;)

    As **** as it seems now, Nelson needed the fight but McGuigan didn't.

    They could have got Nelson for half the money they had to wait and get Pedroza for...:yep

    Nelson would have KO'd Barry McGuigan very comfortably...:yep

    It really goes against what I feel as McGuigan was my school days idol, but Nelson was streets ahead of him...:deal

    Nelson didn't improve his chances after what he did to wee Pat!

    very true mate. The old skillfull champ losing to the young pressure fighter happens quite often (Hatton-Zoo;)). They also had a nice formline with how Pedroza and McGuigan can dealt with Caba and LaPorte, Barry did a better job on both guys.

    :lol::good

    Pat had been 15 with the great Salvador Sanchez in Mexico and then got banjoed in 1 round by Nelson!!! In Cowdells defence he was getting on in age and had been fighting at super Feather for a couple of years when the shot at Azumahs featherweight title came along.

    The way McGuigan fought in the LaPorte fight was fantastic and showed he could operate amongst them...:yep That right hand he swallowed straight down the pipe in the 9th was testament to his condition and resiliance...:yep

    McGuigan would have whooped Steve Cruz if they fought in Belfast and maybe would have been boxed into a corner to defend against Nelson in the end...who knows how it would have panned out...:think

    I love my McGuigan DVD collection, it was a great time to have been around watching it as a kid...:thumbsup

    I read a few years ago that Barry's hardest fight was avoiding Nelson. Whether he said it or someone else did, I don't know, but it's still true. Cracking and deservedly popular fighter that Barry was, his best performances seemed to be before he won the world title.
