according to a tv programme i just saw, this is one of the forgotten matches ever made. I dont know alot about mcguigan and know even less about nelson. Anyone wanna shed any light on how this wudda gone?
McGuigan was a rough tough strong fighter at the weight who beat an old Pedroza for the WBA title but the holder of the WBC title was "The Terrible Warrior" & believe me they kept Barry well away from Nelson for a very good reason as he would have suffered the same fate as poor Pat Cowdell who taken the late great Salvador Sanchez 15 rounds. Barry was hoping to cash in on the big Irish American market until they ****ed up by fighting Steve Cruz in the blazing afternoon Vegas desert sun. Go to 5.13 on the 2nd video & listen to Nelson on McGuigan. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgXJgSJu_rQ[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KknIYaMmGSg[/ame]
The program is talking out its ass. Nelson was in a different league. McGugian wouldnt have seen the final bell.
Back then i always said this isnt no even match fight(as some had tried to hype it up as) i though Nelson would kill him then and my opinion is the same.... Mcguigan would have been made to order... Mcguigan might win a couple rounds early but by the by the mid rounds hed take a beating and would be brutally kod.... Nelson ko 8.... Nelson was at his best at 126 and imo a bit better than he was at 130.. Although many of his biggest wins and wars were there he was not the same fighter. Imo Mcguigan was a damn good fighter but far from great and lucky to be in the IBHOF.
Mcguigan was a big puncher and very popular, but Nelson was special and really would have hunted Barry down , I think we were at 12 rounds then??? But it wouldnt have gone the distance. Still dont know why he fought Cruz in 100 degrees humidity. Mental.
Depending whose belt they fought for... Nelson title defenses were 12 rounders and Mcguigan lost in 15 to Cruz.. WOuldnt have mattered though as Nelson would have kod him.
