Pac lost his last fight with JMM in many's eyes. So did calzaghe. Id put b-hop and JMM above them too. Especially since Marquez's casamayor win.
All Margarito does is walk forward and throw loads of punches. He's not a top 5 fighter, Cristian Mijares has been far more impressive. Margarito is another guy that is going to wind up losing a 10-2 decision and dropping off the radar completely. It makes me laugh people genuinely think this guy would have challenged Mayweather. Even Paul Williams will beat him again.
You have to take into account a lot of things when compiling these lists, not just the Win/Loss column. Calibre of opponent, current form, manner of victory, manner of defeat, the "prime/over the hill" argument, titles at different weight divisions etc. For instance Hopkins dropped a bit in the ratings after his disputed losses to Taylor, as well as after his SD loss to Calzaghe (that of course was after he had rose again following his wins over Tarver and Wright). However, even in defeat, he was always still hanging about at the back end of the top 10 or just outside, due to the competency of his performance in those defeats (he still looked the goods). Roy Jones on the other hand dropped like a anchor down the ratings after his defeats to Tarver (II) and Johnson, due to the fact that he was brutally KO'd both times and looked shot to bits. His position has stabilised somewhat since Tarver III, to the point were some are giving him a chance of beating Calzaghe. He is still nowhere near the top 10, but he isn't in freefall anymore either. With the weight divisions argument there are differentiations to be made. For instance JMM's victory over Casamayor gets him more credit for me due to the decisive nature of the victory and the calibre of opponent, than does Hatton's disputed win over Colazzo. Someone like Vasquez is rated so highly for me, due to the manner of his victories (the two over Marquez, and the come from behind stoppage of Jhonny Gonzales). Rafael, despite losing his last two, stays in the top 10 due to the manner of his defeats. He is also raised up by being a two-weight World champion. Like Vasquez, he gets praise from me for being part of the greatest trilogy (IMO) in boxing history.
Cheers. Yea, these lists are often very subjective, with people crediting certain things, and not others.
OMG that is an awful list. For one just because Margarito beat a top 10 p4p entry in Cotto does not mean HE should be in the top p4p. Its the same as when Mayorga beat Forrest, he was suddenly in the top p4p 5:-( As for Joe Calzaghe he should be in at number 2 and Margarito shouldnt be anywhere near the man. 1. Pac 2. Calzaghe 3. JMM 4. B-Hop 5. Calderon Thats my top 5 and i wouldnt mind swapping Bernard and Ivan.
Barry M' explanation "I have Joe Calzaghe at four. Hopkins' display against Pavlik, an opponent lined up for Calzaghe, showed just how good Joe is and how well he performed to edge Hopkins. It was not a pretty win, but he found a way to triumph after climbing off the carpet. I believe we'll see a better Calzaghe against Roy Jones in a fortnight. He has to be at Jones convincingly. Roy is 40 in January but looks haggard to me, much older than Hopkins. Jones is a shell of the fighter he was. There are some who say Jones will beat Calzaghe. I don't see that. I think Joe might even stop him." "At three, Antonio Margarito. This kid is right in the slot for me. He is relentless, prepared to walk through everything thrown at him. For an opponent it must feel like being in a sack and being beaten with a club, not knowing where the next blow is coming from. That is what it is like when Margarito comes at you. It's a constant battering. He hits everywhere and every punch is delivered with the ferocity of a baseball bat. People said Miguel Cotto quit. Absolute rubbish. He took a dreadful beating. He was hammered from first to last. And Cotto hit him with some big shots."
As i said before i shook my head when the Ring magazine had Mayorga in their top 5 p4p after he beat Forrest. Just because you beat the man doesnt make you the man is a verse alot of people should remember when it comes to P4P rankings.
People like Barry should know better than to jump on the band wagon after one big win. But sadly this happens alot in boxing, the main stays of Calzaghe and Hopkins get leapfrogged by one hit/win wonders.
personaly, i dont even think calzaghe can be in the top 5 p4p. who has he beaten. b-hop won that fight!!!!! and then who else. jeff lacy? kessler? there not great. calzaghe is a top british level. nothing more.
He beat Hops (clearly IMHO), Lacy, Kessler, Mitchell, Woodhall, Brewer, Reid, Eubank.......you can pick holes in the wins (too old, shot etc) but who would you have above him that you couldn't pick bigger holes in their wins? I know Hopkins is the current fans favourite after the Pavlik fight but he didn't beat Calzaghe that night.
