Cotto at 5? Cotto shouldn't have been top 5 before Margo beat him he's top 10 at most. Hopkins 3? I really don't know where to start with that one? Lost to Calzaghe, 2 loses to Taylor, theres only Tarver and Pavlik on there as decent wins in the last 3 years (no, the light middleweight Winky Wright doesn't count).Top 5 maybe but no way third.
You have Cotto in the top 5(above Calzaghe) when he lost to a guy who wasn't even top 15 p4p and when he wasn't even a top 5 fighter before that loss?
personally i don't think it's a disastrous list, simply because margarito isn't slick or doesn't use his jab to great effect does not mean he is not a skilled boxer, is the ability to be relentless in attack, stern in defence and the heart to carry him through the trenches not a skill, is it not possible that he was beaten simply because of styles rather than being outboxed, it's obvious someone who is rangy and keep well out of the inside will do ok against him but someone who can't is in serious trouble. just like cotto is at a stylistic disadvantage against a strong inside brawler, im not saying margarito is top 4 but he doesn't deserve alot of the criticism he comes under here. my top 5 JMM Pac Calzaghe Hops Marg i can definatly see how you could have hops above calzaghe after the pavlik fight considering how close the jc hopkins fight was!
who would i pick above him? my top 5 p4p and lots of other at the moment, howeverit depends on how you judge fights. hopkins landed the damaging shots. calzaghe didnt have hopkins troubled once, and you could argue calzaghe was busier, yea he was busier but if he wasnt throwing shots properly and just landing open gloved punches how can you even call that being busy.
Even if you had Calzaghe losing the Hopkins fight, even if you believe he's not a top 5 p4p fighter how the **** can you have Cotto at no.5??(and I'm a big Cotto fan)
yup, cotto is world class, just because you lose, you shouldn't lose any credibility. thats the problem with boxing today, you get one loss and everybody thinks your not good. he was beating margo convincingly for the 1st 6 or 7 rounds. at least he fought the best out there, unlike calslappy. when people talk about him beating eubank etc there is lots of other fights he could have fought but didnt. its not joe's fault, its frank warren really for putting him in against these people but whats done is done just like calzaghes career ended by roy jones on the 8th of Nov
Its not Cottos one loss, its the fact he shouldn't have been in the top 5 before it, so he certainly shouldn't be there after it. Either way, what has that got to do with Calzaghe?
Like opening Pandora's box eh? So much **** to consider when attempting one of these things. When it gets too confusing, best just to fall back on gut instinct instead of trying to come up with some all-powerful never fails formula...basically because there isn't one. I've listed a few things in a previous post that you might want to bear in mind, but they are not the complete be all and end all, and everyone can have certain criteria that they will lean towards over others. We are all human beings, and as such we are flawed. There is no perfect list, but Barry's top five is particularly imperfect in my view. People could say the same about my list though (they might think Vasquez is too high). But to hell with it; it's good to debate the matter anyway. We are boxing fans, and as such we would like to possess a consensus top ten...it just ain't gonna happen. We can still argue the matter out.
These kind of comments make me smile. Are you claiming to have a better knowledge of boxing and be better informed than Barry McGuigan?
Could be he is claiming that he is not a "brown paper bag receiving yes-man" type like Barry is. :hey
