I know what Dana did and he learned his lesson. He will keep his fighters sheltered under the UFC banner so as to NOT look like a fool again. Dana is too scared to repeat what he did with Chuck. To me it is an indictment to how good he actually thinks his fighters are. He has little confidence for all the bull**** he talks. This is why Lesnar or any of the other guys will never be considered the best of all time, because Dana holds them back. Why would a fighter be ok with that?

 

the heavyweight division in mma is hard to place, so I see no problem with bas rutten's rankings.


every top heavy at the moment has strikes against them, weather it is losses or just lack of experience.

fedor was so clearly the top heavy for so many years with nog being the #2, since that era has gone the heavywieght division has been in a transitional phase (which kind of makes it more interesting) give it some time and I think it will become clear.

I definitely think alistair has the skills to be considered the #1 guy I think he has proven that his striking is the best in the heavyweight division in mma. he also is quite dangerous on the ground with more than half of his victories by submission, he probably has the most dangerous guillotine choke in mma.


overeem only has one true submission loss, and that was to werdum so I would say his ground skills are less of a weakness than lets say lesnars striking abilities when you consider who each has fought.

I will admit I am very impressed by his recent performance in K-1, but I dont think that has much if any bearing on his standings in mma. It is also hard to say how much weight his annihilation of brett rogrers should have considering thier is now way to really know how good brett rogers was/is yet, we do know that his skills were limited to mainly punching power.

 

How is Arona taking his back and pounding him into submission not a "true submission"?

 

well beebs I usually dont consider tapping to strikes a submission victory, but technically he did submit to the strikes.

let me ask you though if someone goes into a fetal position while being beaten on and the fight is stopped do you consider that a submission victory? (its not required for someone to tap for them to lose by submission)

 

Neither does the unified rules of MMA. It is considered a TKO. Previous rules in older promotions used to list these as submissions due to strikes.

 

anyway, my main point was simply that overeem is not a fish out of water on the ground.

I would also add that many of his skills would make him particularly dangerous to most wrestlers his huge physical size his powerful knees in close and the guillotine choke I think would make overeem a difficult task for most wrestlers, style wise.

Sherdog have Overeem as 8. That's unbelievable. Somehow, they have Werdum, Fedor, Cain, Dos Santos, Carwin and Frank ****ing Mir rated higher than him. I've barely seen Overeem fight and even I know that's ****ing stupid. He should at least be in the top 3.

 

Don't pay attention to Sherdog. Its like playing poker at Bodog, the odds are shifted in favor of company men.. Make no mistake, Sherdog is the UFC's *****. They do however maintain some fantastic Data, and humorous biased MMA, "journalism."

There's team takeover that spends half its time bashing Sherdog, still decent.. But right now I like this place for MMA info without super bias.

No, but the guy was put in a dominant grappling position, like Hughes vs BJ 2 or Hughes vs Gracie; the tap came because of being outgrappled at put in a terrible position.

Much different than when Serra dropped GSP and then pounced; Arona methodically worked him over.

If you are basing solely on potential and talent, then sure, Overeem appears to have all the ingredients, that is plainly obvious. However, Overeem has never actually proven that he is a top 3 HW fighter by actually fighting.

 

It would seem that Lesnar hasn't either based on the flaws we have seen in his fights.

That he holds a belt seems to merit him such a high heavyweight ranking. If it's the belt, then Overeem should be ranked highly as well. Sometimes we pay too much attention to record, and not enough on how fighters have actually looked in the ring. Overeem has looked incredible in his outings, Lesnar has looked very beatable.

 

They have both looked beatable, and have both been beaten.

Overeem however, has his best win against a guy who got his arm snapped by Sean McCorkle.

Lesnar has beat Mir, Couture, Herring, and Carwin; a far, far better list of scalps than Overeem. If you want to count Overeem's wins at LHW, then you have to count his terrible beatings there too.
