To be honest you scooped up the only pre-nineties name I could really think of (MikeDeJohn).
Maybe battling Jim Johnson?

Anyway come on man, Cream is always best live:

Bert Cooper was a contender, and he had other tools, including excellent hand speed.

My hometown Indy boy!!
I was ringside for many of the Goins, Marvin J, and Sammy Nesmith amateur fights and my buds and I ALL thought Norman would be the superior pro. Unfortunately IMO Norman became 'right hand happy' after turning pro instead of utilizing a decent + left hook that could have been used better (I might blame that on his trainers, names escape me)
Retro sidebar: The last two Indiana GG's championship lightweight fights for featured Norman against Ken Snider, an Indiana farm boy who could 'crack' BIG time! They were good friends and, knowing no one else would be there when they met for the GG's title, Norman went to the Snider's farm and sparred together prior to the tournament BOTH years. Goins was better (by a nod) but their 2 fights at the Armory in downtown Indy were epic!
Their second (final) championship battle was...simply...jaw dropping!!!
We were upstairs (so close to the ring you could jump into it) with, basically, all the 'brothers' who respected Snider. That first round in their final GG's matchup?...I've never seen one round in the history of boxing that matched what we saw! 3 frigging non stop minutes of toe to toe, trading bombs and coming back for more. At the bell ending the first round everyone in the place rose to their feet SCREAMING AND APPLAUDING!!! At the end of 3, Goins got the close decision (rightfully so).
Sorry for waxing nostalgic but I wish all of my buds on board here could have seen that 1st round!!!
TIMELESS!!!

!
Jack: the GOD of electric bassist's not to mention his prowess on acoustic bass/cello. Many rockers, jazz fusion, and even jazz bassists mention him as an influence. Show me another band that sounded anything like Cream. They were all soloing but none were soloing(live in their prime)! Hendrix's fave band, Blood, Sweat & Tears fave band, etc.
Back to thread. Nice to know that so many appreciate Jack's talents!

I just thought of Alvin Blue Lewis:

http://www.streamingsportstalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/1344631288.gif Oh ****, never mind. He actually fought Ali in 1972 and gave a good account of himself. That's one of the few Ali fights I'd never watched all the way through.

Some of the guys mentioned were undoubtedly contenders.

For example, there is no question that Firpo, Galento, and Cooper were contenders.
