I would say Ross is more mobile here, and would be best to adapt his boxing game. Gavilan I feel will be the bigger puncher here and look to be in his aggressive counter-punching role. I just see Gavilan winning the exchanges with wicked counter-punches and edging it on points.
I agree Greg....I watched Gavilan vs Janiro II today, and Gavilan showed some good counter-punches..... But in my opinion Gavilan would be slightly more stronger....I think that would be the main difference here, because they are equal in my eyes in the ATG level......
By the way, Burt problably saw with his own eyes Gavilan......I would love to read your opinion Burt......
Vic, I saw THE KEED fight a couple of times live, and many times on television.In the 1940s Gavilans stock wasn't as high as he is rated nowadays. Barney ross, if course I never saw fight [my dad loved him], but I once saw him alone at a bar,a couple of years after his Marine heroics. I:barf, coward that I was didn't approach him to say hello. About that time they made a movie about his life,and i was awed by his reputation...no fighter in HISTORY did what he did at Guadalcanal .He licked an addiction to morphine, and he licked great, great fighters like Billy Petrolle, Tony Canzoneri, Jimmy McLarmin. the tough Ceferino Garcia, and like Gavilan,was NEVER stopped. Who would win ? Gavilan was a true Welterweight @ jr. middleweight. Barney Ross was a souped up lightweight the last part of his career. Winner, pick em, but I lean to the larger KEED,by a split decision in 15 rounds...
