Neither Randall Tex Cobb nor Ray Mercer ever acheived all time great status, but both were considered threats in their perspective primes. Neither was very quick or terribly skilled as technicians, but both possesed reasonable punching power, stamina and great chins. In 1980, Tex Cobb was 17-0 and had recently topped an aging Shavers. In 1991, Ray Mercer was 18-0, and had good wins over Tommy Morrison, Bert Cooper and Francesco Damiani. I think both men were around 30 at this phase in their careers. My prediction is Mercer winning a decision over a 10 or 12 round battle, in which many hard shots would be exchanged between the two. What do you think?
I think Mercer was 2 leagues above Cobb. He defeated the much better men, and his gold medal at the Olympics shows that he also had some skills. I also remember the Lewis- performance, Cobb wouldn´t be able to put on such a fight. Wide UD or late TKO for "Merciless"...
I watched Mercer in a Smoker in Mannheim back when he was a Sergent, before the Olympics.....Mercer to win and become immortal at the words of Tex Cobb. I know of no one boxer who said more really clever things.
Mercer was the better fighter ,with more power and a bit more speed ,then again most were faster than Tex but in his prime he had a chin nearly on a par with Chuvalo.Mercer by decision.
