Terrible fighter, rugged and very strong but almost completely lacking in skill. Club level fighter at best. He and McTigue who was also poop may be one of the lowest points the division ever saw.
A highly respected fighter of the time, nearly got a math with Dempsey, and some fancied his chances. His arrogance cost him against McTigue, he was a far better fighter than he showed, as Carpentier found out! Peter Benson's book on Siki is a fair read.
I don't think it'll be hard to find 10 light heavyweights better than Siki in each decade of last century.
Well, I haven't read the book about him, but I didn't notice much respect for him as a boxer in contemporary press. Not to mention, it was Carpentier's arrogance that costed him the title. People, who saw Siki's fights ringside, commented that he was unskilled, but very tough and wild brawler. The film confirms this.
I am a huge fan of Carpentier, but by 1923 Siki was (with hindsight) always going to have his number if properly focused. It was a massive upset, but in the league of a Johnson/Jeffires or Corbett/Sullivan upset; people choosing to be blind to their heroes seeing better days....
Siki wasn't thought to be good, in the first place, unlike Corbett and Johnson. Siki and being focused really don't fit in the same statement. He was savage not just in the ring, but as a person, very unstable mentally, much much worse than Golota or Ibeabuchi. And he was easy to outbox, if you had at least some skills and wits to avoid getting into a brawl with him, as was proven time and time again.
I think of him as one of those "on his night" guys. He's a tough fighter I think, a handful for anyone. I agree with TBooze that he had Carpantier's number. Maybe top 30.
Larry Gains in his excellent autobiography "The Impossible Dream" tells how Siki used to go around the Paris bars ,order huge rounds of drinks ,then ask the barman if he believed in God ,on getting a yes reply he would then say "well believe he will pay this bill".A nutcase.
