At that point, it's better to do it a punch too early than a punch too late. Why wait until he take a possible vicious hit and goes down again?

I think Cotto would have made it through. Not that it would have made much difference so it doesn't matter terribly to me

I agree he should have been allowed to finish.

At first I was suprised by the timing of the stoppage thinking it either should have been earlier or not at all.

Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure Bayless saw something at that point that made him stop it. He was willing to let Cotto continue fighting earlier, but after that last power shot he realized Cotto either wasn't seeing the punches or was not reacting to them and was going to end up hurt.

    Good stoppage IMO.

The stoppage was fine. While it should have been done sooner Cotto was making a case for himself by at least staying in the fight for the majority of a round and even boxing effectively despite the damage.
But when it comes to the stoppage itself, it's the Referee's job to stop the fight when he feels the fighter is in danger of taking TOO MUCH damage, regardless of how the fighter feels about it, regardless of the round and regardless of the amount of seconds left on the clock.

if Bayless is guilty of anything I think it's that he was waiting and hoping that Cotto's corner would throw in the towel before he had to step in himself.

Terrible refereeing, Cotto was no doubt gonna finish that fight, albeit to lose on pts but that was a **** stoppage.

My opinion on this is that he should have been allowed to go the distance. But i will not discredit Bayless or even comment that he is a terrible ref because of what he did. It's pretty obvious that Cotto is no longer trying to win that fight and was just trying to survive. We boxing fan's were disappointed because we were enjoying the fight, on our point of view we feel that cotto can still withstand the punishments he's receiving but I think if we will be on Bayless shoes knowing that the safety of these fighters lay on our hands, we would also give a big consideration on stopping that fight.

Bayliss did an excellent job but was hampered by Cotto never stopping fighting back and Cotto's corner letting the fighter make the decisions. You could see Bayliss was waiting for a reason but had he jumped in sooner he probably would have been criticised the other way. Cotto got hit by a very hard punch prior to the ref jumping in. A good stoppage by an excellent ref.

Yes, he did what Cottos corner didn't have the nerve to do, which was stop Cotto on the stool, given the **** Miguel took for the way the Margarito fight ended.

The fight could have been stopped earlier tbh but it was a title fight.

Exactly...the least he could do is let the man finish the fight...He had 2 minutes to go...
