I have only seen bits of him on youtube. How was he regarded at his peak, he had a lot of losses....Just wondered how good the boxing world thought he was when he was champ
Limon was tuff as nails and had good power, but his skills sucked and he was slower than Molasses in the ring.... Limon was a banger / winger.... He threw wide shots that you could see coming from a mile away... As long as Limon was matched accordingly with marginally talented fighters, his power and will usually prevailed... But when pitted against a slick boxer with speed and finess, Limon was in dire straights... Limon was a crowd pleaser and TV loved him, too... He was a fun fighter to watch.... However, he was more so tuff; not really great.... MR.BILL
He was a good more than the sum of the parts fighter. As bill said, a slow unskilled toiler, who marched in and wound up looping bombs, overcoming fighters with steady pressure.Deceptively good bodypuncher. You could compare him to a more willful Margarito, without the pathetic capitulation while supposedly right at his peak.
He's a guy to refer to when someone asks for examples of fighters who are "effectively awkward." I've heard stories about how he would drive his trainer to distracton because he wouldn't train as hard as perhaps he should, all the while insisting knew his body, everything will be fine come fight night, etc. Terrible balance, slow, winged arm punches, all the things the other guys said. Yet he made it work. He often looked like a drunken chimpanzee in there, winging away as he did.
Incidentally, his comeback against Navarette was in part down to Rolando not being the same fighter after his brutal epic with Chung-il Choi(who Limon also stopped after taking a pasting early).
I have the 1983 mismatch VHS tape between hotshot "Macho" Camacho and "Bazooka" Limon from Puerto Rico on CBS TV...... Camacho was the fastest fighter in the world on that hot day down in Rico.... Camacho was so fast, I thought Limon was fighting in reverse... Camacho basically beat the **** outta Limon for a 5th round stoppage to obtain the WBC 130 lb. crown..... MISMATCH!! MR.BILL
Yes.... At the very old age of 29.......bbb SCARY! Camacho was 21 years old.....:yep MR.BILL:hat
thanks for the input folks, will have a look on youtube as i have only read reports in old copies of Boxing News.....
