On this side of the Atlantic, I have sometimes heard Oscar de la Hoya referred to as the 'David Beckham of Boxing'. The comparison is never meant to be flattering. De la Hoya, say his critics, was a triumph of style over substance; a cynical money-making machine (boxing historian Bert Sugar calls him the sport's "ATM"); a great brand, but not a great boxer. Beckham is familiar with such accusations, although the AC Milan midfielder, who's every bit as pretty as the 'Golden Boy', probably dismisses them as envy. Another charge often laid against Beckham is that he's come up short on the biggest stage: five major tournaments for England and outshone at all of them. De la Hoya, too, was found wanting in many of his biggest engagements. This content is protected Pernell Whitaker made him look wretched, he squeaked by Ike Quartey, he threw away the decision against Felix Trinidad, the judges robbed Felix Sturm. He fared well against Floyd Mayweather Jr, but he was demolished by Bernard Hopkins and made to look pathetic by Manny Pacquiao in his last fight last December. continued:http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bendirs/2009/04/the_beckham_of_boxing.html Thoughts?
I agree with the observation that he lost too many big fights, but to criticize him for the Hopkins and Pac loses is a liitle harsh.
I think any link beween the two is tenuous at best. I also think its a lazy comparison and has no real meaning.
Beckham was never anywhere near the top players in the world whereas Oscar featured at the top end of P4P lists in his day.
Oscar was also robbed agains Mosley (rematch) and Trinidad. Oscar was a hell of a fighter. And yes I'll say it a great fighter. Beckham was a good footballer not a great footballer.
Very overrated fighter and a phoney slimeball to boot. Beckham seems a very decent guy, a very good professional and he's actually become underrated in recent years. there is no comparison.
Your subjective opinion on the personality of a person that you don't know, have never met, and are unlikely to ever meet, has no bearing on that persons ability or achivement.
At least Oscar mixed it in his biggest fights, many think that and have a good case that he beat Trinidad as well. Beckham never did anything in WC's etc, in fact he actually cost England in the major tournaments.
Both were considered pretty boys and earned alot of money...but thats where the comparison ends as far as im concerned. Some of the comments on that article are just ******ed. One guy calls DLH a legend but NOT a world class fighteratsch.
Ricky or Oscar who do hate more? Christ sake, take the fraud James Toney out of your avatar, the wannabe gangster from a middle class family who can't stop eating, is a drugs cheat now as well as a former drug dealer. You spend your time insulting fighters but idolise a fool like that. Go and see your doctor he might be able to prescribe something for you.
its really hard to say IMHO Both of them were huge celeb figures in there time Beckham still is i'd say oscar is more talented in his craft theM beckham but not by a huge margin but compared to the counterparts of there era i'd say Oscar is way ahead of him when ppl remember DLH they'll mention him with the same names as Mosely and trinidad when ppl remember Beckham they sure as hell wont use his name in the same sentance as the zidans and ronaldos
I met Beckham a couple of times in his early first team United days, seemed a very decent and good-natured individual guy. The only thing he's ****ed up was getting married to that woman. Never met DLH in person but he always seemed fake to me, and there are too many stories about him for it to be coincidence, in my opinion. And like I say he was a very overrated fighter....the evidence is there in pounds and pence apart from anything else. So wind your neck in.
