If I was a Calzaghe fan, I would be bitterly bitterly disappointed a man with his talent was retiring with such a shoddy resume. IMO, Calzaghe is lucky if he sneaks into a p4p top 100, he certainly does not make a top 75. His resume wil depreciate with time as the only real top quality wins on there are Kessler and Hopkins, and in 20 years he will wish he had pushed the boat out and took the risks to form a better resume and legacy.
Imagine that he doesnt like rematches but fought Mario Veit again.. Bearing in mind he wiped the guy in a round in there first encounter. The only reason why he fought him again because it was another easy WBO mandatory and he clung to his lifeline which was the WBO. Joe is a man who`s rhetoric has zero credibility. He flip flops more than a politican and his words have no basis in fact. Joe does love money and that has always been his motivating factor in this sport hence why he held onto the WBO for so long and why he rematched Veit. Without it he would have been a nobody.
Rematches in disputed fights are warranted but not in this case. Calzaghe/Hopkins was not a disputed fight. Joe got his rhythm and won rounds and they were not great rounds. He pretty much controlled the fight Do you really see the point fighting Hopkins again and wasting the buildup on a guy who is 44? Yeah he beat Pavlik but really time to move on. Yeah he is a wonder man at 43, but Pavlik was exposed as ordinary with a guy who has a gameplan. Joe beat Hopkins the first time and I thought pretty convincingly. He didn't knock him out but Jones was not really going for it in the late rounds and Joe was still winning rounds. In my mind conclusively. Then he beat the guy who beat Hopkins -Roy Jones Jr. easily. The best fight for Joe is Taylor, and really in that fight what does it prove? I do not think fighting Hopkins proves anything just because Hopkins exposed Pavlik-that makes no sense. Maybe Hopkins should fight Taylor now to prove something. Pavlik was not as good as we thought, but Calzaghe has nothing to do with that. I think it would be great to see a great fighter retire on a winning streak. It never happens. Can you imagine if Ray Leonard would have retired after Hagler? Or ev
actually probably not. Joe has proven a lot with his wins over all the guys he fought. Warrior. The only thing I doubted in a post is that he would have an easy time with Hearns. Joe is a great fighter. The only thing I can think is fighting someone like Taylor to cement his legacy. But really he is 37 years old either now or soon and that is not a young fighter. His style is not a style to go that long with age. He should retire soon because his busy style will eventually start to slide with age. That is a young man style and he has done well with it for so long.
Dawson has a 'moderate' mandate to fight Calzaghe. Not good enough. And who are these other 'worthy opponents' you speak of? Lol. Bitter Kessler fan. :yep So you know for a fact that Calzaghe is a narcassistic SOB? You know him personally? He's retiring (undefeated), deal with it. Didn't Veit's promoter out-bid Warren, so Calzaghe had to go to Germany?
I don't care if Slappy Joe retires undefeated. If CalSLAPPY chooses to fights soft opposition and faded veterans just so he can break Marciano's record, then yes I have a major problem with that as should any other boxing fan.
