The New York trip was tough - the 9/11 aggro pushed the fight back. It also meant that two of the four papers I was covering the fight for decided to send men as it was the first event of any kind in New York after the deaths - I was reduced to two papers and then I luckily added LaMotta with the Observer. I had to pay my own flight and hotel and in the end probably made less than a 16-year-old makes for one week in McDonald's. But, I got Jake in form and also a two-hour breakfast with Budd Schulberg where he talked about his film unit at the end of the Second World War and what it was like discovering the first film of Nazi atrocities inside the camps. Priceless. Adios.
"This fight will be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I've been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious." On his upcoming fight with Michael Dokes.

"If you even dream of beating me you'd better wake up and apologise" Mohammed Ali "I am the greatest fighter in the history of the sport. If you don't believe me, check the cash register" Mike Tyson "A boy comes to me with a spark of interest, I feed that spark and it becomes a flame, I feed the flame and it becomes a fire, I feed the fire and it becomes a roaring blaze" Cus D'Amato
Love the Don King quote you often mention "You don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate" aswell.
"I was gonna rip his heart out. I'm the best ever. I'm the most brutal and vicious, the most ruthless champion there has ever been. No one can stop me. Lennox is a conqueror? No! He's no Alexander! I'm Alexander! I'm the best ever. I'm Sonny Liston. I'm Jack Dempsey. There's never been anyone like me. I'm from their cloth. There is no one who can match me. My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable, and I'm just ferocious. I want his heart! I want to eat his children! Praise be to Allah!" - Mike Tyson making a lot of people believe he had a great chance at destroying Lewis lol
You've left out the best bit. "If you want to get technical about the whole thing... Rocky couldn't carry my jock strap... and if I hurt your feelings back there Sonny, is your name Sonny? 'My names Peter', well if I hurt your feelings... SO ****ING WHAT?".
Told to me personally by Mike Tyson - "Cus D Amato was the greatest trainer who ever lived cos he took a ****** and made him heavyweight champion of the world [Patterson]. To do it once is amazing but he did it twice."
There is nice list mounting. The Benn line was ace. Longcount's Tyson line is raw. I never get tired of Larry - he used the same line after losing to Nielsen in Denmark. Ryan D the reason I love that Don quote is that he had his arm on my shoulder at the time. Adios and thanks.
