Yes, he died a few years after the fight - in the shower

I am not sure if it was in Africa.

He may have taken up sparring even though he was banned from fighting, but I am not sure about that.

If he did, that is sad.

No way he should have been taking any shots to the head.

he was lucky to survive the first brain injury without permanent brain damage.

Ouch! The first fight the ref just stopped it, didn't he? For no other reason than he couldn't stand it any more. I think it was Steve Farhood that wrote 'There is a place in the world for disgust at the violence of boxing but a boxing referee is a strange man to have it and the ring a stranger still forum to show it.' Or words to that effect. Neither man was winning, it was just a rock 'em, sock 'em slugfest.

As for fights that seemed to finish fighters. Starling seemed to beat the fight out of Honeyghan even more conclusively than Honeyghan had done to Don Curry; Steve Cruz, or the conditions, did for Barry McGuigan; Goyo Vargas v Paul Hodkinson was nasty and Hoko never recovered.

I wondered how Lou Nova got on after Tony Galento beat him up and was surprised to see he had a good career once his bruises had healed. Thinking about this. Did fighters from earlier eras do better in getting over beatings without their careers shuddering to quick stops? And if so, why?

Perhaps that indicates that the decline, post-bad beating is as much mental, the exposure in front of the media means that modern day fighters have to live with a loss on a day to day basis more. Or perhaps it means that fighters from yesteryear had to get over it or they wouldn't eat. I don't know and wonder what others think.

PS shame on the poster who said Michael Watson.

Green had a lot of drug issues, and being with Don King didn't help. If he really wanted to try in that fight, Mike would've had hell on his hands to deal with.

    The Benitez fight proved little.

It only went two with Benitez breaking his ankle, and Moore couldn't hit him on the ropes.

The true effects of the Duran beating were evident later when Moore was stopped by Buster Drayton and Lupe Aquino as well as embarassed by John David Jackson.
