Apparently, he injured/broke his leg after getting up from a fourth round kd, hobbled after Janiro on the dislocted knee cap until the official decided to call the fight. There was a feature story in SI, written by Gary Smith that discusses that fight.
..this was one of the earliest fights i listened to on friday night radio. i sat with my grandfahter by the big radio in the living room for the joe louis fights, but it wasn't until later that i got hooked on boxing myself. i listened to them regularly on the radio at my bedside. beau jack was hugely popular at madison square garden and for a time held the record for appearing in the most main events there...the record may even still stand. he had been out oif action for a while because of an injury to his knee. the fight with janiro was his return. very dramatic radiio broadcast. i think it was don dunphy at the mike. janiro was winning handily for the first three rounds, and dunphy kept saying that beau didn't look as if he was moving correctly. then in the fourth he went down. i don't remember if it was from a knockdown or a fall. either way, when he got back up his knee buckled and he couldn't stand, so the fight was stopped. i don't know who did the picking up, but as they carried beau out of the ring and up the aisle dunphy said the entire crowd was on its feet and on the radio the cheers and shouts of encouragement were loud and long. sorry for going on like this , but i haven't thought about this fight in a long time, and it's one of the fights of that era that got me really hooked on boxing.
