Hi Jeff Absolutely! Next Wednesday (think it's the 22nd July). Really looking forward to it. Piper's really buzzing about it too and can't wait. Kev's an extremely cool guy, a pleasure to talk with and he spoke very highly of you. :good
Right then. All you trainers could give me some more advice if possible. I got knocked back from my local club. Not enough experience, too many trainers, not training again till the end of summer, were the reasons. Whilst I work away I've decided (upon Jeff's advice) to get on some courses. I think it will probably be the YMCA Gym Instructor course. It provides CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing Gym and a recognised Gym instructor qual. Also it provides me with 20 'reps' points (whatever they are - i can't figure out what the points mean or add up to). What i'd like to know is whether or not you believe this to be a good step in the right direction whilst I plan on getting a job closer to home ? Cheers again in advance
Hi Dan, Unfortunately I'm not too clued up on which fitness qualifications are worthwhile and which ones aren't. I'm a little too "old school" in that all I have traded on in the world of boxing is experience (outside of boxing, my only other qualifications are in mechanical engineering - not a lot of use in this instance!). That's not to say I don't think it's a wise decision to look into it, in fact I think it's a very smart idea. Fortunately for me, what I lack in formal sports science education I know plenty of people who are qualified and have great experience in that area who help me out and advise my boxers. So I definitely think you are making a good decision to pursue it, as it will only be of benefit to your future boxers - regardless of the piece of paper you will acquire, but rather for the actual knowledge you will be able to obtain and utilize. With regards to more specific guidance regarding these type of courses, Jeff has an excellent background in this area and no doubt he can offer you some sound advice, he really know his stuff. Kevin (Maree) who also posts here is another one who has top qualifications and experience in this area. To answer your general question though - yes, it is definitely a step in the right direction. Whilst it is not something absolutely necessary, it can only be an advantage and can do no harm. As I say, I often utilize the knowledge of others who are qualified in this area, and by no means am I too close minded not to listen and act on their advice preferring to stick to more "traditional" methods. Whatever works to optimize the boxer's conditioning will do for me. Back to more boxing specifics... Sounds like a real cop out all the excuses they gave you at the first gym you approached. I will say, there are some self-centred arseholes in the sport who are only concerned about what they've got going on and don't make much of an effort to help others. However, there are also some fantastic people who are truly passionate about the sport and will be more than happy to help you out if they can, so please don't be put off or disheartened by the attitudes of a few.
Thanks Gaz. to be fair mate i've heard that the guy who runs it is getting on a bit now and has been ill, hence the reason why the club has ceased to run for the summer. The sports centre where it runs from did actually tell me first that they'll be no lessons until further notice. I was a little disheartened by the fact that the secretary (think it was his wife) said it wouldn't be beneficial having to train the kids and train someone with no experince at the same time ??? I told her I meant no real experience in coaching and that I had indeed boxed before but she just said "well still...." It was Jeff Thomas who reccomended the fitness course but i'm not sure if it was the same one as the one i've found. I left the Army last year but still have credits left to go on a course where they will pay 80% upto and including £1000. So basically if I find a course for £1250 i'll have to pay £250 myself and so on... They will give me this £1000 once in a financial year 3 times within 10 years. So in reality I can do a course per year for the next 3. Cannot combine the money though :-( They have to be acredited by the Army resetlement Centre though which not all are. The one listed though is. What does Kev Maree post under BTW ?? Thanks again
Did you pursue Farnells offer ? You is in Manchester aint ya ? I guess ya canna pm him here ( need 50 posts to PM aye ? ) but ya can leave ya number or email on the public section of his profile. If i was in your shoes, i would be jumping on that offer. Just rock up even, tell him who you are, pretty sure it would be fine. Im sure a lot can be learnt even standing in the furthest away corner. No, thats a fact actually. GO GO GO ! ! ! Dont think.......DO ! ! ! :thumbsup
Hairy. Yeah chatted to Farnell a little bit. Actually been to his gym a couple of times to watch. Top trainer and top stable. It was him who told me to try the local club.
