Were successful unorthodox boxers rebels when learning boxing? By rebel I mean ignoring their trainer telling them to keep their hands up, stop being flashy/cocky for example. Or is it a case of they were taught them styles or are they self taught?

I only know of one successful unorthodox boxer and he actually knew how to box, he fought unorthodox to throw off the opponent and make it entertaining.

If someone is fighting unorthodox it either means
A.) They have no effing clue what they are doing
B.) They have a high level of technical skills in fighting

They're usually self taught and a lot of unorthodox boxers are unsuccessful because they ignore the basics and don“t use a whole lot of tactics. Some trainers teach unorthodox styles to their fighters based off of their physique and physical advantages. If you choose to fight unorthodox then you better have all your basic fundamentals in check, because once your opponent neutralizes your style then you're screwed. You need to have the basics to fall back on.
