I have loved boxing since childhood. Growing up I read whatever I could get my hands about the fight game. All sports are great, but boxing held a different aura and the excitement of the great encounters and the sheer drama they produced couldn't be beat by football, baseball, or the NBA. I came to know about Conn, Sullivan, Gans, Duran and Gomez. I cheered Alexis and cried for Gomez. Trinidad gave me thrills watching him win the championship at the San Diego sports arena, when he was a nobody. Today however, the game has lost its relevancy and no longer holds the drama it once did.

I cancelled my HBO and SHO subscriptions today, something that would have been unheard of in the past after all, what is there beside Ward vs Kovalev to hold my interest? and even that scrap may ultimately become a farce with Ward playing keep away and making it a dull affair. The truth is the whole thing has become a bore and the powers that be are slowly killing the sport. I will always love boxing, but will no longer follow it as closely. Just like the rest of America, I no longer care. Hopefully someone or something will bring me back

Maybe the sport needs to "die"? So that the people in charge of it can learn their lessons and make it rise from the ashes better than before? It's become a "business" too much.

    Hey RG,

I hate to say it, but I feel exactly the same way. Although we are occasionally treated to a real fight (Vargas-Salido, Cuadras-Gonzalez), for the most part fighters these days go to extreme lengths to avoid a best vs best pairing. Sometimes I feel as if a part of me has died. Unfortunately, there do not appear to be any signs of boxing coming back in any meaningful way. Several years ago, I could often get into spirited, intelligent debate on the sweet science at websites like Cyber Boxing Zone. But ESB is continually saturated with trolls and witless fanboys for certain overhyped fighters.
Thank god for my thousands of old VHS fights and YouTube.

i cannot relate to the american boxing scene as you can but as far as i understand it the tv companys are charging you about £40 uk or more for every fight in the usa /a lot of them not competitive / making boxing a true working class sport an expensive sport to follow.

i refuse to pay for ppv american bills in the uk anymore / not willing to stay up completly through the night to watch the main event taking place at 5am on a sunday morning after paying sky/espn £100 a month for my subscription .

boxing needs less belts /better matchmaking /free tv /better undercards/

i agree completely. ive also been a loyal fan since early 70s, but its not the same sport anymore. to really get an accurate feel for boxing at its best and at its worst, you really have to have been a fan as far back as the 80's, or early 90's at least.
boxing had a different place in modern culture back in the 70's. i remember being able to talk with random people about the big fight coming up and most knew what i was talking about... but then again, most of us only had like 5 channels and 1 newspaper to find out what was happening in the world, so we were more connected.

In America, boxing is weak. But look overseas, and boxing still thrills. Every week, there's great cards in the UK, Japan, Russia, etc. Even China is developing a decent pro scene.

Which makes me wonder: maybe the reason Americans no longer love boxing is because the rest of the world has caught up in talent.

Young fighters need a bit of reality, they need to understand they aren't stars, not yet, and stop being such a cry babies for everything.

Ive been a fan since the 60's & been in and around boxing ever since. Its even got me disillusioned today.
Back then the Heavyweight Champion of the World was regarded as the supreme athlete. Today no one knows who is the real champ.
What is ruining boxing is purely & simply GREED!!!!! & that led to CORRUPTION!!!!!!!!!!!
Today a fighters contacts & $$$$ backing him makes him as successful or more than his boxing talents
The days of fair fights between two evenly matched opponents have long gone. Its expected to see young fighters giving their all & legitimately beating narquee fighters but getting shafted
You only have to look at the events leading up to, during & after the Mayweather-Pacquaio debacle of May 2 2015 & you'll see rampant corruption. They don't even try to hide it either
It really breaks my heart to see the sport I love in the state its in today End of Sermon !!

    AGREE.
Boxing is totally **** now or maybe it's always been **** ..... and after watching it for a few decades anyone with a brain can no longer live in denial of the fact.
But let's not spoil it for the younger guys who've been following it just a few years.

It's all fake anyway. But no one ever cared about that.

It's only like 30 bucks for both combined, that's a small price to pay. What you don't like Game Of Thrones and Ray Donovan?
