Lewis was 3 years younger and had not been fighting at a Championship level for nearly as long. At the same age Lewis was squeeking by Vitali and calling it quits.
Yeah and I say that Lewis is better than Holyfield...not some biased fans here that Lewis beats everyone...thats even more of a stretch
Tysons claim to fames are beating a 50yr old Holmes and a blown up Lt Heavy. Holyfields claim to fame is losing his career defining trilogy to a guy who did ****all else in the sport. Still wanna play this game :think
Lewis is the best since Ali no doubts at all. George Foreman himself said he would never fight Lewis :bbb :respect
That might be becuase he didn't train as there was nobody worth fighting and he was the undisputed champion.
I'm a huge Lewis fan. I favor him over Tyson and Holy. The issue is that it makes no sense to assert that Lewis was old and out of shape at 37 and Holy was close to prime at 37. Many people actually think that Holy won the second fight. I'd say that in 99 Lewis was at his best. Holy from the Bowe fights would be a toss up against Lewis.
Even Holyfields trainer at the time, Don Turner, says that Lewis would beat anyone in the history of the division [at the end of this clip], http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L9C8ySLNB4
Lewis himself knew that it was more than just being undertrained. That is the reason why he retired. If he was 32 and not 37 he would have rematched Klit and blown him out. He knew that he was on the slide and did not want to risk his legacy of retiring champ and beating every fighter that he ever faced.
Holmes wasnt 50, he was like 38. Spinks was undefeated champ who was the first fighter to beat Holmes who had like what 48 straight wins, he cant be that bad. Lewis was a great fighter, but he never beat anybody great in there prime either, he was 1-0-1 against Holyfield who was maybe only 75% of his former self.
Im not denying he was on the slide but he still destroyed vitali's face and was on the verge of stopping him out of shape and out of prime.
He did'nt win versus Klit by outfighting his opponent. Everyone saw Lewis losing. There is no way that Lewis was making the distance. The glove grazing Vitali's eye and cutting him was a blessing. Lewis also did not get a second win over Vitali because he knew that he dodged a bullet in the first fight and let Vitali run him away from his thrown. There was no rematch as in the Holy fight. Evander could have taken the draw and run but he elected to take the rematch. Something that a Lewis of the same age did not have the cajones to do.
Who beats Lewis???...look you can never know...Lewis was bigger than most heavies but at the same time Liston was knocking people out when Lewis was still in his daddies nutsacks. Lets put it this way..Lets say that all these old greats came up in the 90's and we'll put them in a body of the average heavyweight of the 90's while maintaining their skill Level, same nutrition and training. Like lets pretend Joe Louis was 6'4 or 6'5 and 80" reach.. in the 90's who would beat Lewis then?
George Foreman says Lewis, "Is with no doubt the best heavyweight of all time." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_6rzMaZD68
Lewis was a great boxer. I still maintain to this day though, that a prime Tyson would have knocked him out.
