Been watching some old GGG fights, his speed seems to have diminished

I noticed that Golovkin in the Proksa fight seems faster. Both hands and feet. And the difference is especially noticeable to me if you watch some of his fights from 08 and 09.

Of course those were lower quality fighters. But the hands seem faster.

His not in his physical prime anymore but is more experienced now with better technique and better timing.

I actually agree that GGG isn't quite as good as he was before. He has improved a little in experience and technique but most of it was already there from his amazing amateur career.

That is why I think Canelo might take the fight Sept. 2017.

That's what happens when you reach your mid 30s.... Still a great fighter who's more or less on top of his game though.

Golovkin is a technician with heavy hands, he doesnt need speed to outbox you.

Timing is more important than speed. But it's easier to look like you're timing is great when you have the physical speed to initiate your assualt.

Golovkin was never fast, but he definitely looks slower than he was at the beginning of the decade.

I don't know if he's not as good as he was before. His competiton has gotten better. The year he thrashed Martin Murray and made Lemiuex look lost was probably his boxing peak. He probably can't top that anymore. He's getting older now.

I think he's at that Marvin Hagler point of his career. At the very tail end of his prime. Where he's changing from boxer-puncher to boxer-brawler-pressure.

That's how I see it myself. He's at the tail end of his prime, however even out of his prime I don't see many people beating him at 160 lb.

A bit like how old Floyd and old Pac were/are still top at 147 lb despite being clearly out of their primes.

Floyd and Pac though no doubt good at 147 are in my opinion drastically overrated at 147 pounds. Neither man ever actually beat a good/great natural Welterweight in his prime besides the time Pac beat Cotto. Of course at the lower weights they're amazing.

I digress though. I grt what you're saying about Golovkin being so much better than his peers. That a past prime version is still top dog at 160.

His peers do not match up against even the so called prime past guys that Mayweather and Pacquiao defeated. You can't play revisionist and forget what each man has done to uplift another.

Pacquiao beat prime Cotto, prime Hatton, prime Bradley, and prime Vargas.
Mayweather beat prime Judah, prime Hatton, prime Canelo, prime Ortiz, and prime Maidana.

GGG has beaten prime??? Thats the issue. He has beaten his peers but none are equivalent to even the most shot May/Pac opponent. Bad comparisons, because those 2 are in a class of their own. I would say GGG at 160 is better than Jermaine Taylor. Good but not great by any measure.

Forgot about Ortiz. Didn't include Hatton because his little T-rex reach doesn't go well at 147. He's a JWW. Canelo is a good fighter as well, I'll give Floyd credit for that victory. Was a good victory.

But it's not like Pac and Floyd were at 147 cleaning house against the young, hungry natural Welterweights. They keep on ducking Spence, Thurman, Porter, Crawford, etc.

We weren't really comparing Golovkin career-wise to Floyd/Pac, there's no comparison there obviously.

Just another example of a very good fighter still being dominant to some extent past prime, i.e. if you're far enough ahead of the others in your division you can still be #1 past prime.

He was never particularly fast. He's better now. Because he's so much better than his competition we probably still haven't seen the absolute best out of him.

Such a shame that he wasted circa 8 years of his career arguably from 2004 to 2012.
