Man this fight was absolutely comparable in hype in boxing today except that the racism was open.

Jeffries came out of retirement for a career high payday of $40,000. He even promoted it by saying that he is fighting Jack Johnson to,"prove the superiority of the white race".

After Jefferies lost to Johnson he proclaimed that he could never in 100 years beat Jack in a fight. Give Jim the biggest props on earth for agreeing to a fight with a Black man and actually losing with grace even though the public rioted and killed Black people after the ****ing fight.

Jack Johnson was the "Money" of that time. He was flamboyant, ****y, arrogant, rich and he never shared that with any other Black fighter which I still think is some bull**** that happens today.

Good looking out on this Hulkamania!!!!

This is an ironic post from "Hulkamania", since Hulk Hogan got fired for his racist rant recently :)

I've learned to let go. Everyone says n word nowadays. Whether its intent is vicious or frendly.

1903 Jeffries would've provided a better challenge. To bad we never saw Dempsey vs Johnson

Yeah I would have loved to see that fight take place when he was still active , not after a 6 year lay-off and needing to lose 100 pounds in camp.

Here is an excerpt from an article about him:

In 1904, when Jeffries was in his prime, Jack Johnson met with him trying to pressure Big Jeff into a title shot. Jeff, knowing the politics of the time, drew the color line. But he told Johnson in dead seriousness, "There's a cellar in the place. 'Tell you what I'll do. I won't meet you in the ring because you got no name and we wouldn't draw flies. But I'll go downstairs with you and lock the door on the inside. The one who comes out with the key will be the champ." Johnson refused and walked out. That's the kind of rugged man Jeffries was though, a real fighter. A boxer, a wrestler, a street-fighter. He could do it all.

Can't link articles but search Cox Corner and the guy does write-ups of a bunch of famous boxers.

    Good stuff...
