Calzaghe also fought them way past their primes. Ward > Froch >> Calzaghe.

You say that as if Clazaghe was in his pime when he fought them but all three men - Calzaghe, Hopkins and Jones Jr - were far from their prime at the time of the fights. Jones was shot, that's true, but given the fact that Hopkins went on to beat world champions and be a world champion again I dont think you can say the same about him just because he lost in a close fight to Calzaghe.

So Calzaghe beating legends in their 40s is better than Ward beating the lwh in his prime (albeit at a lower weight)? GTFOH

Calzaghe in his prime would have clowned that version of Dawson as well. Froch would have too.

Ward has the better resume no doubt. Calzaghe's best win are old men while Ward has been beating prime fighters. Ward would also beat Calzaghe in a 8 rounds to 4 type match.

True, but who wanted "the crown jewels" to fight them prime?

Calzaghe slapping around bums while challenging real fighters to come fight for his meanignless unrecognized WBO belt on his own front lawn was a running joke for years and years. Froch has done more in two or three years than Slappy did in a decade.

Isn't it funny how all those Euros who spent the 90's and early 00's defending worthless WBO belts in their backyards were mysteriously "ducked" by everyone who was actually relevant?

But hey at least he beat a 400 year old Roy Jones. By decision. After getting up off the floor to do it. A couple months before some Aussie nobody ever heard of would do it in one round. That's some legacy Slappy has there.

Fact: Joe Calzaghe squandered the bulk of his career being the Welsh Sven Ottke, then beat a couple of old men in their forties and retired.

Ward won by draining his opponent!

Start comparing his shitty resume once he attempts to fight 300 meters away from his hometown.

He also fought them when they were old.

He could have moved up to LH years ago, came to America, and tried to get a fight with a PRIME Roy Jones...he didn't.

He wasn't in his prime but he was fresher than the other two...specifically Roy.

I don't blame him for Hopkins because Hopkins may have been able to fight him years ago if he had moved up earlier. But Roy, he never bothered to fight until the end.

Ward is a future all time great no doubt and may very likely go on to become the consensus number 1 super middleweight of all time but people are over rating this win over Dawson.

I'd favour the Hopkins, Calzaghe beat (if you thought he beat him that is) to beat that weight drained version of Dawson, Ward beat last night.

Do we hail Sugar Ray Leonard's win of Donny Lalonde as being a great win? Of course not, Ray fought him at 168lbs and the win meant very little other than technically getting him the light heavy title.

Dawson was an idiot for asking for the fight at 168lbs. We've seen a bunch of fighters in recent years drop down in weight and look terrible. De La Hoya, Toney, Roy Jones, Byrd all dropped down in weight and got dominated like never before.

So while he earned a win over a good name in reality it's not as impressive as it could have been had it been at 175lbs. But clearly he didn't have much choice in that. Dawson took a calculated risk to ensure even if he lost he would still be a champion. Dawson basically got what he deserved last night, he didn't respect how much he would be compromised by dropping the weight and got his ass kicked for his mistake.

I don't like overrating either, but to say that Calzaghe beating Jones and Hopkins is on a higher pedastal than this is bull****... and hilarious.

I pointed that out myself in the fight thread.

It's why I can't give him the credit some others are giving him.

The possibility of being weight-drained was there and makes it a valid excuse and/or reason as to why Dawson wasn't at his best instead of knowing you were the sole cause of it.

Ward had a chance to move up, fight Dawson at his best weight, and have an opportunity to be a part of history by winning the LH Championship and becoming a two division Champ while holding two lineal belts in two divisions at once.
Not many can say they have done that.

And others including myself pointed all this out when serious talks of this fight happening first appeared.
