Calzaghe pussied out of fighting at light heavy many times before he fought the corpse of Roy and old ass Hopkins. Calzaghe's resume is pathetic compared to Wards.
Look at how close ancient Hopkins pushed Calzaghe (many had him beating Calzaghe). Ward was rated above Calzaghe before the Dawson fight.

I like Ward but he has never, ever 'stepped up to the plate'. It's the one thing that pisses fans off about him. He'd kick Dawson's ass at any weight so why drag Dawson down?

 

It's about how you have been looking in recent fights/years more so than just age. And Roy was looking horrible. Hopkins had been declining for years but he is a very smart fighter who can rely on technical abilities to beat certain fighters... but against someone like Calzaghe, he wasn't going to be able to do that alone...just like he wasn't going to be able to do that against Taylor.

Calzaghe NEVER made the move to LH when Roy was still in his prime. That's all that needs to be said about that.

Hopkins however, Joe had two options: Move down like Dawson did or wait until Hopkins came to him. So in this case, it's not Joe's fault if he doesn't want to move down (like Dawson did) and can't get the fight at SMW because Hopkins is looking at other options...like setting a MW title defense record and later getting O$car.

So really, with the Hopkins option on hold, he could have moved up to LH and went after Roy in America.

If Calzaghe were German none of the ******s and British here would give two shits about him. They'd call him an Ottke 2.0 who had to get up off the floor to beat the shot corpse of RJJ, the same shot corpse that got crushed by some Aussie journeyman a couple months later.

 

When the **** has Calzaghe ever had accuracy or sparked anyone out? Calzaghe didn't beat Kessler that easily either.. some people have short memories.
Ward is better than Calzaghe in terms of resume by a country mile. Head to head you have to favor Ward as well. Remember Robin Reid? What prime world class opponent has Calzaghe ever beaten?
