Mikey, did you take Calzaghe's 'effective aggressiveness' into account while scoring. Or Hopkins hugging tactics?
I think Calzaghe didn't know where he was for the first half of the fight, he looked lost and Hopkins was spoiling his boxing early on every time Joe went in Hopkins would tie him up and then land, and even getting some power shots in, Joe just didnt look impressive at all first half of the fight, a lot of rounds were give and take in fact I dont remember Calzaghe cleanly winning a round bar the last two. He was nicking rounds
I'd certainly agree that for the first three rounds Calzaghe was like a deer in the headlights. The rounds were very close because very little happened in each. Personally I think that Hopkins' holding was preventing much from happening. While not being overly impressive, Calzaghe marched forward for the entire fight, wanting to force it. Hopkins' simply spoiled throughout. Cortez should have got a grip of the game and jumped on Hopkins from the off...but, then if Cortez did this, Hopkins would probably ended up getting DQ'd as this was his gameplan. I have to take my hat off to Hopkins though. At 43, he is a fine specimen and he's as smart as they come. He would make any fighter look bad, most especially Pavlik. Saying that, I don't think I'd ever pay for a fight that involved him!
I admire Calzaghe for not panicing after the KD. Apart from that - I predicted that if he would **** himself if he got dumped (Which is a nice ****ing sentence) - it went almost exactly as I predicted, near exactly.
115-112 calzaghe the compubox numbers show joe did the attacking and i just do not think bhop did enough work! also the "breather" he had when he was breathing heavily in rounds 9,10
Even though it was a close fight, I'm really struggling to see how anyone could score it to Hopkins. Maybe I blinked and missed his one punch per round!
