Hi Guys, A newb here. I've decided to try out boxing training this year for the first time. I've been hitting the bags for a couple of weeks so i went for a one on one lesson with an Ex Professional World Champion. Needless to say i found it pretty tough!..but very enjoyable at the same time. He picked out lots of things wrong with my technique but told me i had good footwork. (this is probably due to my history of playing soccer). I booked a block booking of ten lessons for £325 (Is this a good price?) Has anyone got any tips to help me improve and coincide with my once a week workout? I don't plan on becoming an amateur, solely for fitness really but never say never! Entering the ring for the first time was fun so i could quite easily pick up a buzz for it if i start sparring. I run four times a week and hit the weights 2/3 times. How often should i train to box a week - should i box and lift together? Cheers (Great forum by the way) Fiore
In my experience and seeing many new guys in my gym the best tip I can give you is: Shadow boxing. Your coindition will also improve by doing it, but the most important thing is getting used to technical basis (stance, movement, proper shape of punches, defense...). Once you start doing it more naturally you'll be able to learn new things easier, endure more and you'll be able to do more intense continuos work (without pauses to correct technical failures). No need equipment nor too much space. A mirror will always give you feedback to keep working properly.
Great post and welcome to the forums by the way. To be honest, I think the whole weight training is bad thing is really an old school way of thinking. Of course, we don't want to become bodybuilders and max out everytime we lift but wouldn't hurt to lift a little. Like Caiman said too, shadow boxing is important as well to practice your form and footwork. I'm actually in the same situation as you. I shadow box, jump rope, run as well as lift some weight and am also thinking of joining a boxing gym maybe next month. My question is though, how long should I train for before I start sparring? I only ask because I've heard many opinions on the matter and it isn't really clear. Any input or advice is welcome for us newbies
