How did he get a title shot so early? Plus he was defeated in his first title attempt...I can see it was a MD so obviously warranted a rematch, but even so, seems very rare and pretty lucky. Anyone got any answers?

I believe that Shumenov started out as a lawyer.

Surely he didn't duck Cleverly, though, did he?

Cleverlys team put out an offer for Cleverly to fight Shumenov in America. Shumenovs team couldnt get a date they wanted so didnt want to know or a date, something along those lines, so Cleverlys team offered the fight in the UK and they declined.

Thats why Cleverly is fighting who he is next because Shumenovs team turned him down

He fought much tougher competition in his early fights than most do. Simple as that.

Beibum Shumenov is garbage. I hope he retires. He refuses to fight Cloud, refuses to fight Cleverly, WTF?! Get the **** out of boxing if you refuse to fight unless there are William Joppy types around for you to beat on.

Im from Kazakhstan. And I know that his relatives are owners of oil company, thereby he doesn't need money. He will just keep fighting with weak opponents as long as possible.

Well the guy had very solid wins over Epi Mendoza, Montell Griffin, and Byron Mitchell, so actually he was more qualified for a title shot than a lot of the guys who get title fights.

That being said I don't expect anything special from the guy. I expect he'll rack up another meaningless defense or two before he loses his title to an actual top notch fighter.

I know that Jean Pascal really wants to fight Shumenov.

Alex - obviously you are not from Kazakhstan and don't know his relatives as they do not own an oil company. They are self made hard working people who own a couple businesses not oil companies. However, I am sure like everyone else, they wish they owned oil companies. Also, Shumenov never turned down an offer for Cleverly or anyone else. He has made offers to Cleverly, Cloud, Pascal, etc. They either ignore the offers which means turn them down or make up some excuse in the press. Everyone should know, you can't believe everything that is written or said in the press. Shumenov will fight anyone as it showed early on in his career, it's others who won't fight him. He fought Joppy because Braehmer chickened out a couple days before the fight, he fought Ornelas because Cleverly wouldn't fight him. Simple as that.

    kota, are u Shumenov? ))
it's true that I don't know his relatives, but it's obvious that his family is rich enough to promote his career. Boxing people of former ussr countries just keep talking about his good financial position as self-evident. For example, he earned only 1 dollar against Enrique Ornelas while Ornelas earned $20 000. Why? Coz he doesn't need money. Moreover, Shumenov organized almost all his events. These facts that explain a lot.
You know there's no smoke without fire.

I don't like Shumenov coz of:
1: Campillo got robbed against him.
2: He fights once a year against weak opponents.
3: He fights a lot in his hometown etc.
I will support him when I see that he deserves it. now he doesn't.

Ps: Я из Алматы если что.

Alex, you just showed yourself to be a liar.... first you said you know his relatives and then your next reply, you said it's true you don't know his relatives. Your posts show your ignorance and that you are a liar. You obviously don't know the business at all, eventhough you think that you do because you post that Shumenov made $1. Did you get that from the NV commission or your so called USSR sources. It does not matter because you don't matter. But here is a lesson, most fighters purse on their boxing contract that is reported to a commission is not their whole purse when they own their own promotional company and promote the fight, too. For example, in the past Manny, Oscar, Floyd only report a certain amount to the commission as their purse... Do you really think, Manny made $5 million for his one fight?
The last tidbits for your stupidity, Beibut has fought more world champions/former world champions in his short career then when compared to anyone else with just 14 fights. Also, you state almost all of his fights have been in his hometown. Let's see he has fought in Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Washington, Las Vegas, California, and Astana, Kazakhstan. Only 5 of his fights have actually been in his hometown, Shymkent where he still lives. Most World Champions fight a lot more in their hometown then Shumenov has. Plus, they fight in their hometowns because that is where they can sell the most tickets. Common sense, something you lack obviously.
Your post was quite amusing and no I am not Shumenov but actually an adversary. However, I have much more respect for him then I do someone who doesn't like a person because they are ignorant and jealous.
A liar doesn't remember what he says 5 minutes ago......

Haven't seen Shumenov/Campillo I, but from what I've heard from multiple people, Shumenov got robbed. Therefore, the well known robbery of Shumenov/Campillo II was turning the tables from their first fight.

He fought a lot of faded but named and notable opposition in his first several career fights. He warranted a title shot more than many out there who get it.

He was set to unify titles with Braehmer when Braehmer pulled out I think it was 48 hours before the fight. He fought Joppy on super short notice so that the card wouldn't be cancelled.

The Uzelkov first title defense is certainly a good one.
