El Malagueño seems fairly skillful, actually - just undergone tough matchmaking, to explain the 6-3 record.

Xicoténcatl Gutiérrez puts almost no snap on his punches, nor is he accurate with them - just whipping his string bean arms haphazardly and hoping something will stick.

Even so, he's getting through with some and seeing accumulative damaging effect, as there is puffing around both of Salazar's eye sockets.

Salazar has the "duck-and-roll under the right hand, come up with a left hook counter" down-pat, and has Xicoténcatl Gutiérrez's rhythm totally scouted.

    Round 1

Soto is stepping in and jabbing into Ruiz's guard. 1-2-3 by Soto, thrown at half speed/power, testing out the waters. Ruiz gets in a few body shots. They stand a few paces apart, each taking his turn leading the dance. Brief clinch. Soto rushes in and pounds Ruiz on either hip, below the elbows, twisting in with each hook and then withdrawing outside with oily grace. Soto loses his footing momentarily burying a lead right aimed for the navel but caught in Ruiz's lowered crossed-forearms guard. Long clinch. Soto walks Ruiz down and they press their arms together, sumo wrestling. Soto breaks loose and lands a couple of vicious swipes at the body. Ruiz steps back and launches his own straight volley at Soto's belly. Soto walks him into a corner and unloads. Ruiz falls against the middle rope, but a knockdown isn't ruled as he yanks himself up and the bell sounds.

    10-9 Soto

Correction: actually, El Gallo has fought at super fly several times (once as high at 119lbs) - but this is his first time at the weight in 2 years.

Tabugon should be an easy W.

    Round 2

Soto is dancing around, catching some of Ruiz's jabs on either palm with a window-wiper motion of his arms, holding both gloves up by his chin. Soto dashes in and flurries, then muscles Ruiz into the ropes and starts to whack the body with heavy looping blows. Ruiz manages to reverse position and spin himself loose, putting Soto in the corner and landing a few shots upstairs. Soto walks him into the ropes behind a long jab. Lead right on the belt line by Soto, paired with a glancing left hook. Ruiz mysteriously goes down after they shove together for a moment of grappling and jockeying for position, with no punches landed. Ruiz makes his way to a neutral corner, grimacing in agony. Some kind of injury. That's all, folks.

    TKO2!

Soto is back in the winning column for the first time in 25 months, in his first return to action since the loss to Antonio Orozco (as of this coming Monday exactly a year ago)

Not sure he's going to be a player at 147 (let alone 154), though. He's just too small... and Ruiz tagged him up too much to like his chances with legit guys at these weights.

A bit like the "Donnie Nietes Flyweight debut" myth...
