There is no English language North American live televised boxing on this particular Saturday night. This is what there is.

 

Nava is returning from a two-year layoff. Given her status of prestige within the WBC organization - being their first ever female champ, and with most of her career fights being for their world titles - and with this being for their Intercontinental belt, a token victory here over a journey-woman probably gives her a cut-to-front-of-line pass to vault up the rankings despite being so inactive (and pushing forty) and set up an opportunity to reclaim at least one belt from her unified reign (none of which she lost in the ring). Surprised the WBC didn't just make her emeritus champ, to be honest, giving her an instant crack at the current holder.

 

I just scanned through Boxrec. Not really. Hammer getting dropped but rallying to stop Price sounds like about exactly how that should've gone.

I barely follow the sport anymore - had no idea who if anybody was in action this week before looking.

 

Montiel could be an upset risk. Last time he faced a 19-0 prospect - Ivan Montero, in a beIN main event, he drilled the kid and scrambled his brains with a surprise lead right hand from which Montero never recovered, giving Montiel a TKO3 victory.

All three of his losses and his draw have been split or majority decisions.


Munguía like Montero has a nice looking record, but is unproven (with perhaps less quality names than Montero had).

Round 1

Munguía is hopping in and covering up tightly, bowing forward and trying a left hook on the waist. Montiel triples an uppercut and sticks a long, hard jab between Munguía's arms. Munguía jogs away from Montiel's long-range pressure and starts jumping in to attack in short bursts. They close together by the ropes and Montiel is hurt by a series of chopping hooks with either hand by Munguía. Montiel is driven into the ropes by a series of lead rights with Munguía peppering in stiff jabs and short hooks with his left to keep his rhythm steady and balance intact. Everything is landing. Montiel in bad shape.

...or he might be at the wrong end of a noncompetitive blowout, and Munguía could improve to a 20-0 (17) mark and emerge as the real deal.

 

That was close to qualifying as 10-8 without a KD, had the dominance of Munguía started maybe thirty seconds earlier.

 

Round 2

Munguía is ducking and weaving under Montiel's jab and banging his body with hooks and shallow uppercuts, shoveling his fists in while continuing to weave side to side and thread his neck and head around Montiel's outstretched jabbing arm. Somebody has clearly been doing their diagonal-string-across-the-ring head movement drills in the gym. Montiel is leaning his tall frame over Munguía, attempting to drape a wet cloth over him and winging uppercuts at close range, smothering his own work but also slowing Munguía's offense down in the bargain. They split to mid-range and Munguía swings big and misses with a giant hook, almost spinning himself around. Montiel steps hesitantly into range, wary of the power behind the shot he avoided by luck, and then starts to pull out while throwing his own wide telegraphed hook. Left wide open, Montiel is devastated by a well-timed looping right from Munguía. Montiel is down and out flat on his face seconds before the bell!!!!

KO2!!

 

Ring now full of physicians attending to Montiel, shining a light in his eyes and gripping his upper skull to keep him in place. He isn't moving his neck or spine at all. Finally he manages to rise with assistance. The crowd cheers and Munguía looks relieved.

Not certain but I believe Montiel has never been down.
