Carlos Gorham vs. Fernando Cárcamo Garcia, 8 rounds @ welterweight

 

Round 1

Cárcamo is drifting with his weight shifted port-side, bobbing with his fists bunched up beneath his chin. Wide sweeping punches by Cárcamo as he and Gorham circle each other at mid-range. Gorham is simply hanging back, leaning away from Cárcamo's telegraphed croupier's rakes, and countering down the middle with a quick avalanche of a nearly backhanded jab unfurled down from over his own face and followed by a short overhand right. Cárcamo stunned, but keeps pace with Gorham circling and still trying with his sweeping punches, blindly guessing when Gorham might drop his guard instead of picking spots.

Round 2

Cárcamo is starting to plug Gorham on the belt line with a long straight left hand from outside. A few up top. Gorham exploits his reckless abandon with a sharp counter that has Cárcamo staggering into a corner. Gorham pursues and is rocked himself by an uppercut flush on the bottom of the chin.

10-9 Cárcamo, looked fragile again late (possibly swaying knee-jerk reaction judges against him) but overall put in stronger work using that southpaw rear power hand from a distance to both head and body.

This was originally meant to be a light welterweight contest but the combatants both happened to come in overweight, and coincidentally by the exact same amount. (both 143 on the scales) :think

 

Round 3

Cárcamo is putting together a pecking right jab zip-lined from his jawline through Gorham's thumbs, unsuccessful in breaking apart his tight guard but always responsibly withdrawing back to starting position when done, minding his own defense now - and left uppercuts shoved insistently past Gorham's forearms, at the very least troweling a groove up his chest if not grazing his chin. Gorham for his part is remaining calm and stuffing as many of those uppercuts as he can with his glove palms turned downward, and countering with jabs while hopping in double- and triple-steps around Cárcamo, dropping the occasional right hand on the brow when he finds himself a split-second ahead of the latter's reaction time whirling to about face.

Round 4

Cárcamo is dribbling his right jab off Gorham's left wrist, a diversion as he pounds away downstairs with the left uppercut and shoulders his way inside, head kept tucked low, clinching after putting in enough work to get close. Gorham is making him struggle to close that distance, sliding around him, just a bit fleeter of foot, and discouraging him with not only the left jab but long scything rights cutting into the side of Cárcamo's neck.

Round 5

Cárcamo is looking arm-weary, generating no snap or achieving much in the way of textbook form with his punches but still pushing and whipping/slapping as hard as he can manage with them. Cárcamo has made a slight adjustment, however, of now drawing Gorham along, baiting him with sweeping punches but now on the backfoot, and then shoe-shining and spamming quick short repeater left uppercuts as Gorham clumsily moves forward in a role he's clearly still getting his bearings assuming.

Round 6

Cárcamo DOWN in the opening moments as Gorham presses in to meet him in ring center, abruptly catching him with a left hook and clubbing right hand combo on the face. Cárcamo is up but laying on the ropes, getting pelted. Cárcamo shells up. Gorham tries his body. Cárcamo folds in half but somehow remains upright. BIG right uppercut by Gorham, bursting through Cárcamo's guard. Well over 90 seconds left. Cárcamo on jelly legs. Gorham lands a left hook on the liver and every inch of Cárcamo is set to quivering. Intelligent clinching by Cárcamo. He seems bent on surviving this frame and praying he can recover enough during the minute's rest to battle on. No offense. Crowd boos the clinching. Gorham drops his arms looking at the ref with an eye-roll as Cárcamo literally clings to him and rides him across the ring into the ropes.

Cárcamo fights are never boring.

 

Round 7

Cárcamo is circling within a half meter of the ropes, then springing forward in brief raids with big long, high-arcing morning-star lefts and gazelle right jabs, most of them blocked yet fulfilling their intended purpose of keeping Gorham honest. Gorham is starting to exhibit signs of a low gas tank, pressuring but having to constantly steady himself as his legs splay uncertainly, never quite setting his feet enough that his own punches don't set him off balance. Cárcamo is still employing clinches all while flopping in close, arms folded up and pressed into Gorham's chest, then pushing off to slap with body hooks and loop some lefts into Gorham's eye. Gorham is waiting, firing single counters, and rocking Cárcamo with the occasional straight right over the top even as Cárcamo lands on him.
