Seems now being champion of the world is becoming meaningless.Mosley must be shakin' his head-After lookin amazin in becoming the genuine titlist at Welterweight he has to gatecrash PBFs post-fight interview with his enforcer Bhop to try and hustle for a fight. In the days of one champ per division Pac v Cotto would be a final eliminator for the title and a match with Mosely would be bigger.Take Pacquiao-he's had less than 15 world title bouts. For someone with 55 fights thats not much.Winning a world title isnt nearly as great an achievment as back in the 50s but surely bein the recognised welterweight champ still counts for something.
Explain how, if there was on champ per division, Mosley would have got a shot at him moving down in weight and coming off a loss in his last welterweight fight?
Too many organizations, but only a few are really respected/recognized. It still counts depending on how you see it. It may be different now, but the fighters are still the same, with their warrior hearts, and hunger for bigger challenges. It has become more commercial now though, and is producing big revenues. Boxing fans can separate the fighters that care about legacy from those who dont.
Obviously all about money-take Cotto. After losing the fight to crown the legitimate titlist he can pick up a bogus belt, defend it and go into a super-fight calling himself a world champion. Its almost forgotten that he was pasted a couple of fights ago-though the loaded gloves controversy put a question mark over the loss.
You're not wrong, but seriously, people have been saying this for decades, it's not exactly a fresh observation.
Course-but being the real champ was always respected. Not like Mosely holds the IBO title or somethin.
Good post although 15 World Championship fights is a lot for most guys. Hagler only had 13 or so. Hearns I think had 19.
I don't think anything can fix boxing to make it back where it was. The organizations do not care about boxing, they want money. And they will not give up money and sactioning fees for the sake of any fighter or sport. I think Oscar Delahoya mentioned having a boxing League like the NBA, which then would control the champions. I am not sure that league would eliminate all the old titles like WBC,WBA, WBO and IBF, but how else would that happen?
Exactly. I think we're all used to the alphabet mess now. Doesn't even bother me anymore, i genuinely believe plenty of boxing fans pay no attention too much anymore and know what are the right fights. Plus it seems that most fans know who the lineal champs are these days more and more. Of course it's still a **** problem, but i reckon not as much as we used to think.
I agree with you ...but judging Manny's preformance Sat ..Mosely wud suffer the same fate ...See a lotta fighters are surprised at the Speed/Power of Manny ...and spend the night defending his attacks ...his waspish like in and out style ...cuasing probs ...Marquez's technique was the technic to beat Manny ...wait for the wasp to try and sting smother and dig ....if yu notice Manny throws fully extended arm punches ...as he comes in ..YU come in ...low wid head movement and short sharp digs at the ribs and lower torso ...and looping left hands ....irregulate his breathing ...that'll cut down the combo's ...giving yu more chance at hurting him upstairs ... Dont get it twisted ..i aint tryin to hype myself as some kinda trainer / expert ..but i been watchin the game a while and notice **** .... " I can Whoop Him..I'll whoop him ...just stick him ...move ..stick him n move " - Muhammed Ali ( refering to Foreman whilst holding court standing on a table post Foreman/Norton fight)
Shane def have his hands full with pac,no question.Seems like you got two options-have multiple title belts where not even boxing fans care about term World Champ and are just interested in good fights or have 1 world champ who has to defend it a certain amount of times per year.Other fights that would've been for world titles would be eliminators etc.Back in the old days the World Champ was'nt always the best fighter in the division-he could avoid a tough contender by waitin for someone else to bump him off.Would make the game alot more intriquing-obviously not gonna happen in this lifetime.
Sure it can. 1. Promoters and boxers no longer care about the organizational boxing titles, and don't pay sanctioning fees. 2. Organizations go bankrupt. Whether the fans would be smart enough for that to work is another question. Likewise the media. It would also require the promoters and boxers to band together to form a place they "own", thereby removing an impetus for a promoter to leave if he has a guy successful. Easier said than done I realize. I think in order to have a respected world title nowadays, the potential corruption of the organization has to be removed from the equation by them not getting sanctioning fees. If it's not solved within at least the next decade though, at least in the U.S. I think boxing will further decline.
Ah, a kind of Marxist Collectivist theory. That's never failed when anyone has tried to put it into practice! How do you think all these organisations came into being in the first place. It's because the fighters wanted them, the promoters wanted them and the fans wanted them. That's the basic fundamental idea with this. Everyone might agree that boxing would be better off with one title per division, but no-one is going to sacrifice their own self-interest for the collective good.
Please consider that Pacs beat 2 ring champs for no ABC belt, had superfights with Morales 3 times and barerra for no BS titles also Consider that !!!
NFL. NBA. MLB. NHL. English Premiership. And the sport will continue to decline in mainstream fan interest over the long-term as it did in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
