I agree on both counts. I've always felt that once fighters begin to show their age, they need to adapt their styles to fit their age; or they need to retire. I'll give two examples from boxing, Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins. Jones continues to fight like he did when he was a young man. Hopkins made numerous adjustments to his game between the ages of 30 and 40. Fedor has reached this point, Cro Cop has been there for a while now, and Wanderlei is another one. Randy Couture is the only mma example I can think of at the moment. Couture has continued to improve upon his game, and is probably trying to do so presently. I personally think Couture has gotten to the age that speed is too much for him to overcome, but he is almost 48 years old. Those other guys have no chance of making at the top level for that long without ad******g their styles.
