    Bellew Faces Brudov In Comeback Fight

    Tony Bellew will face former World Cruiserweight title challenger Valery Brudov in his first fight at the weight at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on March 15.

    The bout will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

    Stephen Smith is lining up a massive night and is expected to challenge Fernando David Saucedo for the Argentinian’s WBC Silver Featherweight title in a crunch eliminator bout. Stephen’s older brother Paul is also set for a big night, as he is expected to fight for the outright ownership of the British Super Middleweight title belt.

    The youngest of the Smith brothers, Callum, is also in action as he looks to build on an incredible year in 2013 where he raced to 9-0 with a stunning sequence of six first-round wins in the Super Middleweight division, the division where Commonwealth champion Rocky Fielding is lining up an all-Liverpool clash with Tony Dodson, who fights in Hull on February 22.

    Sheffield Welterweight star Kell Brook and London based Lightweight Kevin Mitchell have both enjoyed great nights at the Echo Arena and the pair will both be in action as they build to big fights before the summer.

    Birmingham’s unbeaten Super Flyweight talent Kal Yafai continues on his path to a first title shot, while exciting Liverpool youngster Robbie Davies Jnr faces his fifth pro fight.

    Bellew steps up a weight after challenging Adonis Stevenson for the WBC Light Heavyweight crown in November, and the 31 year old faces a stern test on his debut at Cruiserweight.

    Brudov – 41-4 – has five World title challenges to his name and promoter Eddie Hearn expects Bellew to shine on a huge night of boxing on Merseyside.

    ...and Bellew is proving nearly as thick as Cleverly in his choice of cruiser debut opponent. :-(

    Brudov isn't as fresh as Makabu but is still no joke.

    Thicks a bit harsh, take a soft touch and be criticised, match yourself tough and you are thick?

    Sure no one could have blamed for taking an easier fight but Hearn gets criticised for making things too 1 sided, now he hasnt and its still criticism haha

    I think it's generally agreed that when moving up in weight (especially when talking a 25lb leap between LHW and CW!!) it's OK to take a soft touch first time out.

    (a bit softer than former interim world titlist and multiple time challenger Brudov anyway...obviously a tomato can like a Harvey Jolley with ten KO losses wouldn't do and would get him slated, but maybe a nice happy medium like a Lewie Dickinson, snag a Brit title in the bargain? :think Seems reasonable enough...)

    Not everybody should be help up to weight-jumping standards of a Pacquiao or even Broner or the like, challenging for belts going up successively in their debut in each division.

    Yes but i think thick is over the top, if Bellew wins it sets him in good stead, maybe he doesnt want to mess about at the weight?

    I agree completely about a title shot upon the immediate jump in weight though. I just cant call him thick as he doesnt come across that way haha

    Just had a quick look at Brudov's record. Looks like he's been working on getting down to lightheavyweight. He weighed 180 for his last two fights and is rated at the said weight.

    Bellew will just have to stay on his feet and win 3-4 rounds and he will get the decision.

    How long are people going to continue thinking Bellew is a genuine world title contender for. One more unsuccessful challenge then he'll fade into obscurity.

    Of course he's a contender.

    He's clearly above British level as well as European level, he's on the fringe of world level but when stepping up he hasn't quite delivered.

    Same goes for Kevin Mitchell.
