If that’s your only issue, than let me put your mind at rest, as my family are working class too. There seems to be a group of people that misinterpret chav as a slang word for working class, which it isn’t. It’s for trashy loud-mouthed gobshites like Bellew, literally spitting bile as he calls someone a fooochin rat. Massive tattoos on their back of either their surname or nickname along with the obligatory cross, while behaving like a man of god never should. I assume that along with his drug dealing dad he also has a pit bull called Tyson or Diesel, but have so far not been able to confirm this.
im welsh ...never rated cleverly was gifted his 175 title against a journemyan after brehmer pulled 24 hours before , bellew was dropped by ajisafe long before ovil , and then beat by cleverly a non puncher and stopped by stevenson , if youd of told me he would be wbc cruiser champ (albeit vacant vs a guys who fought no1 in top 10 before or after ''cough mchunu '' ) espescially he was nearly kod by brudov before , id have give long odds , the fact he won , defended , when up to heavyweight and beat a former titlist albeit faded / injured and then competed with a supposed lb for lb nominee , is a massive massive accomplishment , i used to hate bellew but over the years hes grown on me , and definately a hell of a lot better than anyone who watched his rise would of know ... and breidis got a robbery last night agaisnt a guy who won a split decision vs STEPHEN SIMMONS ! perspective and all that!
People using the fact that he had headlined PPV as an achievement make a fair point but it just shows the combination of Sky hype with clueless fans. Bellew has just never been that good. His resume speaks for itself, he doesn't have 1 top win.
Bellew has a Rocky type narrative to his career. He also appeals to a casual audience. He’s a big personality, very animated especially in press conferences and in the ring....and he can genuinely really box well. There was also a vulnerability to him where he’d abandon his boxing skills and get into gun fight, swinging for the trees...sometimes he got knocked down but he was entertaining at times...all the ingredients for a PPV fighter. He was up on the scorecards against a P4P top 3 fighter. He got smashed and still tried to get back up. I’m not making out he was great fighter, I’m not a matchroom fanboy but he’s genuinely been great for British boxing.
You argue his case well but i dont think we will ever agree. Bellew has been matched very well in his career. I just don't rate him very high at all. As for been ahead in the cards, well, if I was Usky I'd be knocking down Hearns door right now. Shocking that 1 judge had him 3 up!
Bellew was mediocre. His achievements are on a par with Glenn McCrory. Imagine Glenn McCrory being sold as PPV worthy or a true domestic star back in the day. Bellew has a big mouth and identified himself with the fanaticism of his local football club tradition. Hearn exploited this very well. The stars aligned when the used up and overrated David Haye took the bait and proceeding to lose to Bellew. SKY not only hype Bellew, they employ him to talk absolute crap. I hate to think which crass personality with mediocre talent will be chosen as "the next Bellew" to be sold as the honest hard-working everyman to the gullible masses.
I'd suggest if you want to make serious money in boxing then you need 'Sky hype' and 'clueless fans,' in this country at least.
****ing hell it seems that for some anyone who isnt in the p4p top 10 is average or ****. So many levels to boxing
