Makabu was clearly overrated and unless people from here actually travelled to Africa to watch his fights, all we had on him was hearsay, a YouTube compilation video and the Mchunu fight. Like someone pointed out, Makabu was iced on his debut so clearly is packing glass. It was a great win for Bellew but in hindsight, clearly very winnable on paper.
I remember it well! Makabu had beaten mchunu and kucher (kucher walked through enzo) Bellew was going in the underdog and was dropped in the first and even did a backwood roll from it! A lot of the shots Bellew landed were on the top of makabu’s head and we know how wobbly those shots can make you.
Good win, but never should have been for a world title. Bellew gets splattered by anyone who is genuine world class.
Credit to Makuba for really earning that fix money and getting himself knocked clean out. Few fighters show that kind of dedication.
His YouTube knockout reel, stopping glen johnson and the bookies odds made him look better than he was. Great win for TB though.
Always been a detractor of Tony's...realized he was better than he looked since about cleverly onwards. Tbf to the man it took big cajones to get in their with haye. He has avoided the big players at cruiserweight...but its not like he,s not took a challenge on. Hayes a damaging fighter...big puncher. giving up weight etc like he did regardless of injury or no injury or the money was too big to not take etc. Sometimes you,ve got to give these guys credit as well. As fans we sort of try to look at different ways to put their achievements down but watching haye hitting the pads etc before the fight. We we,re all thinking...2/3 rounds. Bellew came out fearless that night...and took care of his side of the deal. Bit of a pity that we missed out on some great fights for bellew...but the lucrativeness of the haye fight kind of changed his career path. Its hard to diminish him for that tbh.
Get out of here mong, no rational and intelligent person will accept that Bellew truly 'beat' Haye. If anything Bellew loses credit for his pathetic attempts to beat a one legged man.
