If he somehow beats Usyk I’d rate him about as highly as David Haye in terms of British greats...not top 10... He won’t though unless Usyk has a freak injury or he somehow lands the punch of the century...he’ll be taken to school...
You mention his poor performances but not the many good ones. I believe if he does beat Uysk (not saying be will, i was answering a hypothetical question) and you add that to his many good wins then yes he would go down as one of our countries great boxers.
In fairness is there a cruiserweight in history who could nullify Uysk, only one with a chance of actually nullifying him would have been Holyfield. Bellew is a very underrated boxer but he isnt going to outbox Uysk, his chance is a punchers change (fact he has a great boxing IQ increases chance of him stopping Uysk).
If he beats Usyk? I genuinely don’t know. First of all it’s a massive ask to even contemplating Usyk! The only reason people are giving him a slight chance is because of his previous performances. Usyk is possibly the best cruiser weight of all time, he holds all the belts and is in his absolute prime. IF (again let me underline this a massive, massive if) Tony was to knock him out or beat him on points then surely he would be in the top ten brits of all time.
If Bellew gets outboxed but manages to land a big shot to stop Usyk then he surely has to go down as one of Britains greats. What’s remembered is who won. Not many people can remember rounds 1-4 and 7-10 of Joshua vs Klitschko...it’s the defining moments of the fight we remember. If an opponents attributes are vastly superior to your own (in any sport) you have to dig deep and find another way to win. People are making out that if Bellew gets his head boxed off but lands the big shot that he shouldn’t be recognised as a British great...that’s not fair. To get hurt and busted up by a superior boxer but hang in there and survive whilst continuing to set traps for the big shot is the sign of a champion. I’m not comparing them before anyone shoots me down but did Ali school Foreman...or did he show great heart, grit and intelligence? Does that win not deserve credit then cos he didn’t box Foreman’s head off, he took a hiding on the ropes and waited for an opportunity for his opponent to gas. This is all hypothetical & chances are he gets outboxed and stopped. We all expect it, but there’s a handful on here including me who hopes he can shock people once again.
In all honesty and biased aside, it would have to be in the 20-40 range. If he went on to defend successfully against Andre Ward then maybe higher than that. Personally (after an Usyk win) I would put him around 30 due to a lack of consistency at top level.
Good interview here. https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...fight-david-haye-wife-honeymoon-a8553281.html
Well the rumours and why tony is saying he will show usyk something in pro ranks is he is going to close the distance and fight and rough him up on the Inside. People under estimate bellew is a grood inside fighter. He will stay close and negate usyk movement and any power by fighting at close range and Inside expect elbows heads armlocks low blows etc. Tony knows all these tricks. He will fight him in the pocket that's his only chance. The telling sign was who he is sparring with on the ropes with heavy guys. I think he will.box a little but plan to fight majority of the fight if he can on the Inside.
he's just doing a favour for his best mate AJ by taking this fight. he'll have inside info for AJ when he has to fight usyk. This way he gets to phone aj in the build up and talk to him for ages.
