Bellew vs Cleverly fight review in BN

It was very imbalanced, but BN are thin on the ground for good writers now. Especially that ****ing mong Matt Christie.

 

Boxing's such a minority sport now that there are hardly any new writers.

111-117, how on earth BN can publish such illogical crap is beyond comprehension. Any impartial person with a modicum of boxing knowledge and reasonable eye-site could see the fight was very close. I personally scored it even, but like most people couldn't argue with a round or two either way, the guy that wrote this piece clearly has not found his vocation.

 

You're a fantasist:deal, you hav'nt a clue, Leonard was outboxed & outfought in all departments in montreal & Leonards admitted back in july80 on ABC with Howard Cossel & whats with all this SRL stick & move crap!!! Name me a fight that Leonard used those tactics before New Orleans, yer can't, Leonard's always been a flat footed/plant-em fighter so he could unload his 6+ punch barrages.

Everyone knows that Leonard got Duran back into the ring at short notice with the $9Million purse & Leonards also admitted that. Leonard was castigated by most of the scribes of the day for his timid performence, he fought with fear & dread, Leonard did **** all & Duran did less & the scoring reflected that with it 2/2/1 up until Duran walked out in disgust at Leonards schoolgirl antics.

It's obvious you know absolutly **** all about ray leonard & his style of boxing that he'd always employed. How he fought Duran in montreal is always how he fought & Leonard & dundee where confident of KO'ing Duran no latter than 4.

Leonard was outboxed/out-thought & outfought by the superior boxer & this fight was fought on a level playing field & the smaller/older man beat the younger/bigger/faster & stronger man that night by pure boxing ability. Never ever at any moment in that fight did it look like Leonard was winning it or going to win it, 10/5 to Duran & thats being generous to Leonard. Duran chased the bigger man all over the ring from post to post, Leonard ran but Duran was just as fast with his pursuit, just look at the distress on leonards face as Duran outspeeds Leonard in the countering department.

Take a look at the Benitez fight, how did Leonard fight that one!! What about the Hearns 1st fight after he stopped doing his poormans ALI imitation for the 1st 4 rounds which he handed to hearns on a plate. Round 5 he went back to the same strategy he used against Duran in Montreal & thats the way he'd always fought. Leonard could'nt beat Duran when it mattered, Leonard was comprehensivly beaten on a round by round basis, close tough fight but there was only going to be one winner & the superior boxer won. About time you got a grip on reality & actually go watch some of leonards fights instead of making yerself look like the exposed fanboy you are.

All i was doing was comparing Nathan Cleverly to Sugar Ray Leonard pre Roberto Duran. When Ray Leonard made the statement...

"I'm going to fight Roberto Duran flat footed"

Tony Bellew kept on saying to Nathan Cleverly...

"Don't run, Don't run".......leading up to the fight.

And Nathan Cleverly not only came to liverpool, and sustained heavy abuse from hostile fans, but he fought Bellew at his own game, and fought him flat footed...

"And did not want to give any ground up, it was a war of attrition"

I was just merely making that comparison, and then the situation developed. So i antagonised the situation, because i felt like, and i can.

I agree with everything you have just said on this matter.

 

I have new found respect for Clev coming into Tony Bellew's backyard as the defening champion and taking him on. I'm sure Tony appreciates that Nathan entered the lion's den for this fight and a defending champ doesn't necessarily have to fight away from home in a hostile environment but that's what Cleverly did.
Ah well, it's moot now, but that's what it's all about.
